A different accumulator question...

My '03 turbo started getting a stiff clutch on startup in the morning, as well as a "multi-stage" feel to the pedal pressure, I.E. it gets stiffer towards the floor.

I replaced the accumulator, bled the system, and all was well for a few weeks.

However, for the past few days the same issues have been cropping up. Is this a product of not bleeding the system well enough? Do I need to just go whole hog and replace the slave, as well? Did I get a bum accumulator?

I tried searching, but I didn't see anything that addressed this specific issue.

that could only be because there are at least 100 threads on the very topic . not to be snarky about it but its among the most covered topics in "here". really... so..

the slave often fails commensurate with acccumulator failure and since the parts work in tandem it is easy to confuse one issue with another; eg the slave can be failing and also exhibit the cold startup "stiffness" normally associated with a failing accumulator.

it is wise to change both but most don't because the slave is $600 and the accumulator is only $140 and doesn't require all the labor to get at the slave. ( major )

check the slave for overflow at the front reservoir under the bonnet and also weepage/seepage just under the steering column inside the cabin. a bad slave will "weep" from there also.

also.. even new parts will give an inconsistent "play" and clutch feel if the bleed isn't done properly.this will ( on occasion ) remedy itself thru normal use and working any air out of the system.

hope this helps

I appreciate the reply. I read quite a few of the threads outlining the issues associated with each. I didn't see anything that stated this specific situation. It could be because I was looking at 0600 this morning before my first cup of coffee.

Either way, from what I have read and your reply, it might just be worth the time, effort, and expense to replace the slave, as well.

Thanks.

you're certainly welcome. i possess "snark" irrespective of the daypart, so thx for understanding.

getting at the slave is a ***** and best left to the pros unless you have a lift. can NOT be done on j'stands though the accumulator can.

gl with it

i've done it with jack stands and some hand tools. PITA though. Bookmark a weekend and some band-aids for your knuckles.

"Snark" doesn't bother me.
1-It's the internet, and things can be interpreted a number of ways; none of which are usually the actual intent by the poster.
and 2-Snark is usually just stating the facts, which gets under peoples skin.

Doing the accumulator was a tight job, I don't think I would like to muck about with the slave. I'll heed your advice and have my local indy take care of it.

Thanks.

yes, suncoast has the part cheaper. i needed it same day from pelican so i paid the premium but got free shipping. shipping from suncoast florida wouldve negated any savings.. ( 500 not 600 brain fog ) for part# 996-116-237-52-M100. ..and the 4 dollars more for the accumulator. interesting factoid though. they ( pelican parts ) will not ship the accumulator. has to be picked up

No problemo, we have to stick together in this Porsche community of ours. It was $540 total for both parts shipped, but I am in MD. Someone really needs to make this whole teleportation thingamabobber work already!
