Engine Installation Tips?

Hey guys...my replacement engine came in today. I ended up going with an '03 x50 engine with 45K miles. It has all the accessories and turbos still attached. Does anyone have any tips for removal and replacement? Also, this engine was from a tiptronic. Someone mentioned that I may need to use the wiring harness from my 6 speed manual. Can anyone confirm this for me? Here are some photos of the engine after I got it uncrated.

Hi Byron, may I please ask that as you have the engine out, could you take some high resolution photos around the engine rear and sides, so many time when I work on the car I wish I could see clearly whats there. If they are too big then maybe mail?
many thanks
mike

right off the bat you have the p/s setup perfect for a gt2 slave mod. if you keep the oem slave you have to swap the p/s unit and res over from your old motor. while the trans is out inspect the clutch and replace as needed.
new hoses every place you can put them. they are 10 yrs old and past their prime. all vacuum lines as well.
no matter how much you drain the coolant your still going to spill coolant all over when the main hoses are disconnected. mount the trans before the install. i did mine in about 8 hrs. it isn't that hard on a lift.
if you are using your oem p/s unit you don't have to disconnect anything. unbolt it from the motor and lay it over the backside of the body. same for the a/c compressor. then bolt everything onto the new engine when its in

Engine out, would this be a good time to pin the coolant lines? Good luck and what happen to your original motor requiring replacement.

Make the best of it

Pin the coolant lines, replace belt, plugs, water hoses and inspect the coils. Good luck with the install!

I did a print of the repair manual and follow the instruction step by step. the removal start at page 1168 and the installation start at page 1179 and there are some steps you don't want to miss especially when you raise the engine...

Add me to the "you should pin the coolant lines list"!! I would loved to have had the motor sitting on the floor like that when I pinned mine due to a "pop out"! Check and double check everything as you have to drop her down each time you forget something! Great time for new plugs and coil packs also!

Thanks all for the advice. I had the coolant fittings welded on the old engine so will use those. I have the service manual on PDF. I already ordered a new coolant tank as mine was very yellow and brittle. What is the advantage of the GT2 slave? Doing a search now on that.
