996 TT Power Upgrade Options - Opinions Wanted
that is my recent experience also, but one has to weigh that against the significant gains an exhaust provides. in fact, it has to be ranked as one of the best mods one could do. so as long as the exhaust has visible cats, you should pass visual just fine. if not, switching out exhuast isn't more than a 1/2 hr deal.
i'm just trying to make the point that i wouldn't let ca smog testing prevent me from putting on a good exhaust.

Yes Andy, I run catless in CA and it is really simple to swap in my stock exhaust every 2 years when it's time for the sniffer. I live in the Bay Area too and will gladly help you with the swap if you like.
A decent flowing exhaust is the foundation for every mod and should be on the top of the list of initial improvements you make to your car. The stock setup is crippling.
On the occasions when I put it back on to smog it's like 80% of the gains I've made from ALL my mods are gone. Stock exhaust is just not compatible with performance.

Thanks for the generous offer. What exhaust are you running? I would love to get a listen to it, so I have an idea if it will drone/annoy me on the freeway or not . I still have my eight jack stands and one jack laying around, so I probably should have looked into how easy hard it would be (I did a lot of wrenching when I had my 1993 Nissan 300ZXTT, but after kids and since the 996TT, I haven't seen the underside of a car for a while.)
Finally, I bought a quieter muffler section from speedtech which is interchangeable with the rest of their system and this proved to be just right for me.
I'm in Dublin and you can hear it whenever you like, just PM me.
best exhaust ive had since my old cargraphic, and thats saying something
Andy, my Europipe stage 1 exhaust has no drone and is pretty mild mannered. Makes the car sound more exotic without being too loud and gives you good performance gains. The europipe has no problem passing smog and passes the eye test to the untrained eye since it isn't too flashy but is extremely well made. I'm in the bay area as well (San Jose). if you want to hear what mine sounds like let me know.
13k miles later the car runs flawlessly....call tony at EPL and you wont be disappointed

If you are into track days and canyon roads, I'd put a good bit of that budget towards handling mods. You will enjoy the car much more. Coilovers and sway bars make a huge difference. Then just tune exhaust for power, honestly the most you really need power wise after that is K24 or small hybrid.
For those two things the supporting/residual mods and service will add up. Track/street brake pads, fluid, maybe some brake ducts, better alignment, maybe some good tires. And on the power side, DV's, a clutch at some point.
Make sure you don't forget all of the other mods that will eventually be needed for your driving style.

Hesitating about exhaust and intake because of the stricter smog visual checks in California but will get software tuning for more power. And doing the DVs.
