Coolant

I recently purchased an 02 996TT.

I was wondering could I use any 50/50 mix to top off the coolant or must I use a Porsche brand?

Thanks,

go to local VW/Audi dealer and get the G13 coolant, same/mixes with 'Porsche' coolant, about $25 a gallon...

+1 to the vw/audi g13. plus it's pink, and who doesn't like pink.

You mentioned that you are a new owner. Are you aware that the coolant expansion tanks are known to crack/leak on the 996TT? It is a sealed lifetime system so you should really not have to add coolant. If you are having to add it, I would have the system checked to see if you have a bigger issue to deal with.

Thanks for the replies.

My car doesn't need any coolant just wanted it handy if I needed to top off fluids.

Is there a way I can tell if the expansion tank has been repaired?

it can't be repaired. its plastic, gets old, yellow, becomes brittle and cracks. so you end up usually with a leak, less so a catastrophic coolant dump. it's not a huge deal to r&r unless of course a dealership has to rake you over. then it's about a grand.

i always keep some of the g13 50/50 mixed with distilled. there seems to be some minor evap during summer for me. so a cup or two once in awhile keeps it topped.

rather than start a new thread, does anyone smell coolant from their 996tt -- every once in a while i get a whiff of antifreeze smell - happens usually when car is in traffic or sometimes i'll get out of the car and smell each corner - the smell usually is strongest from the passenger side front end.

I had a small leak but believe it was the common old style coolant reservoir cap - i replaced the cap with the new cap and topped off with some water wetter and distilled water - havent checked again, but haven't received a low coolant warning since

it isn't uncommon to have a pinhole leak from one of the rads. that'll do it. if that's why you smell coolant, you'll have to replace a rad sooner.. or later.
