Well I guess I'll be different. I have driven many different manual transmissions (including cars with the shifter on the stalk and trucks that require double clutching)...mine shifts awesome, LOVE IT... just like a sports car should.

i still double clutch my tt when i can lol

but i'll say it again ( differently ) anyone relatively new to the car, that doesn't know when g'box oil has last been ( or if EVER lol ) been changed, who then has questions about how the car should shift, e.g. what feels "right" vs what doesn't etc etc. isn't going about converting the car to "their" proprietary ownership properly.

change the friggin g'box oil lol... or not..whatever.

That's my next DIY, fresh oil should make a difference.

why wait until 6th to go 160 mph? i do that halfway thru 5th

when i got the numeric i actually thought i had the oem shifter. turns out i already had the blue short shifter installed. pure junk. missed 3rd more times than i can count. put the numeric in adjusted to medium height and haven't missed a gear since. its not cheap but worth every penny

never heard anyone say the difference wasn't night and day and you'll be glad you did. my interval is now ( street ) 25-30k miles tops.

Sage words, no doubt. However, I have driven many many miles on cars with much higher miles that don't have a requirement for changing the gearbox oil so it shifts better. And they shifted much much better. My Audi has 125,000 miles on it, all driven by me and it is a dream to shift compared to the Porsche. I just find it odd.

But you make a good point. I asked for people's thoughts and one overriding suggestion is to change out the shifter and gearbox oil. I'll put it on the list. I've had the car for 3 weeks!

996tt shifting characteristics

Seems to me nobody is acknowledging the primary attribute that influences the feel and action of the 996, a rear mounted tranny utilizing shift cables.

Bone stock 996tt shifter is a compromise, as is the car itself. Change out those parts and every step you take is n improvement. 997ssk or gt3 shifter, 997 tranny mount, tranny fluid. . . Improvement with each mod. However, rear engine shifting feel ill always feel different.

Just my unworthy opinion.

03 996tt with all of the aforementioned. Didn't like it, now I do.

There is always one! Have you modified your shifter or transmission?

Interesting thought, thanks for the comment, you are most definitely worthy. Now that I think of it, my GTO and Fiat both had rod type linkage, no cable and basically sitting right on top of the transmission.

And good point, each mod is incremental which confirms what others are saying.

Wink Shifting

One last mention of an important modification. Remove your clutch helper spring at the pedal and install a milder assist spring. Your pickup point becomes more obvious. This without making the pedal stiff.

Helper spring swap + gt3 shifter + 997 trans mount = what it should have been originally.

Sorry, installed B&M 1st year. I guess I am a lucky one as it was not notchy and very precise. I went with the GT2 accumulator delete 2 years ago and I installed the ball bearing this year just as a second gear pop out preventive measure. I also have GT3RS Stage 2 clutch with LWFW.

torque solutions motor mounts, window weld trans mount, numeric shifter, gt2 conversion, lighter clutch spring and carbonetics triple disk c/f clutch. car shifts like a rifle bolt and never have to force it. the gears just fall were they are supposed to be. I'm at the mid adjustment on the numeric. the short shift was to stiff for my liking

something else to consider. many try to compare the ssk from porsche as being as good as a numeric. were this falls short is in the housing. ssk still are assembled in the oem plastic housing. this allows flex. the numeric is housed in a billet aluminum housing that doesn't move. not a fraction. add spherical bearings and you start to see why the ask are a couple hundred and the numeric is 600. worth every penny. folks don't blink when dropping 3000$ for wheels. hollow spoke oem would work just as well. same thing for this!

While on the topic of shifting. Sometimes from a stand still I have trouble getting into 1st gear. i need to shift into 2ns then it freely goes into 1st gear.

Is there an adjustment that needs to be made?

Thanks...

I used to have this issue in my 996TT. After a clutch bleed and changing the transmission oil it was smooth again.

I too have found the shifting and the clutch action on the 996 to be pretty damned awful! I've got an STi drivetrain in another car who's shifter action is night and day better. My Supra shifter likewise was way better and both have a reverse lockout!

I had come close to giving up on making it better. However I found that removing the clutch spring made the clutch action 100% better and I've not stalled the car since doing it vs stalling it every time I took it out. The next thing I found was that I had a B&M shifter in my car, it was complete junk. I could rattle the handle back and force noticeably and the throws were a bit long. I looked hard at the 997 SSK and other solutions but those are fairly costly and the Numeric shifter isn't much more, they've offered 6spd members a deal. After speaking to someone with CUP cables who had broken stock cables multiple times I'm also upgrading to Numeric cables. When done the shift action should be improved with only a limited NVH increase I hope. Noise, that's the last thing - my exhaust isn't stock and drones badly. I'm doing sound deadener with high hopes. If nothing I'll have the shift action solved and will solve the drone another way if I must. I've not swapped gear oil, I'm interested in hearing what works best and might venture to doing that too depending on how the shifter feels after upgrading, I've been told it can be stiff when cold.

Hope that helps! Ifmyoumwait a week or three my shifter and cables will hopefully be done and I too can describe the difference and effort needed to install.
