My complaint is a little more nuanced and hard to describe. This car just doesn't feel great when going from gear to gear. It gets to every gear, I don't really miss any shifts, it just feels clunky at the point of oncoming gear engagement. Going slowly, hold a little pressure against the next gear and it pops in. Power shifting from 1-2 still gets there, but it has a very slight catch prior to fully seating. No big deal, it gets there, but doesn't feel great.

In my mind I've eliminated a misaligned shifter or bad cable. The 1-2 shift, if my memory of what the inside of a transmission looks like, is using the same fork. Straight down from 1-2 is a pretty basic move, nothing to really screw up.

But honestly, I haven't taken the time to get into the cables and shifter or even look to see what is there. But I can see how swapping out the gear oil with some fresh gear oil might allow for a smoother synchronization of the gears. And that will be the first thing I try when I get there.

The dialog has been great, I appreciate everyone's comments. I think this internet thing is going to start catching on.

Chris
That small catch will always be there when entering gear. It will not move freely between gears with no resistance. At least not with a stock gearbox. I happen to like it, but when shifting fast on track it occasionally catches the lever part way in and spits it back out when I go to throttle keeping me in neutral and causing a couple of bumps on the rev limiter. Doesn't happen enough to be of bother though.

This sounds, as you say, like a preference issue, but every manual 911 that I've driven does that. Not going to make shift any slower or faster as the effort required to push into the gate is minimal. I think my old E39 M5 had a more free entry on shifting. I didn't like it, felt too inaccurate in selecting gears when shifting fast.

I have, after a 3rd gear replacement, had it actually catch but it was audible from the gearbox, the synchros were misaligned. Mechanic took it out and fixed it.

A 997 SSk is a surefire big time upgrade which is not very expensive and will improve the overall experience.

^ and an x'lnt point as since I know the numeric is a crisper shift and has to be stronger than Porsches plastic shifter pieces, I think i paid 75 bucks for my OEM 997ssk and its one of this quintessential "if it ain't broke? why fix its.

And the numeric is 700 bucks.

heres some a bit cheaper and i have seen them sell for 450$ used if your patient enough to wait for the deal.

think about it this way. the factory rims look great and even oz wheels are nice and inexpensive. but so many won't blink an eye at spending 4000$ or more for hre, adv.1 fikses etc.

oh, i'm patient when it comes to things like 3800$ seats or yeah, wheels good example! i can see that when new?! but 4k wheels for a 30k car i can't even justify. i would bet half the stuff aftermarket on my car is used. 997ssk. teq bar, whatever i can find. hell i just picked up another gt3 sway for 150. who cares its dirty. it's a friggin piece of metal lol

i'm not as big on cosmetics on the car as i am on "sh*t's gotta work". lol

OP buys an unknown used car, compains about shifts...and the solution is Numeric. Please.

1. Is your car operating properly.
- Shifter
- Shifter Cables
- Trans Mount
- Motor Mounts
- Tranny fluid
2. Consider a mild update 997shifter
3. Maybe a 997ssk? Depending on what you dont like
4. Rule out clutch actuation in your complain of "shifting"
- Consider mods the the clutch actuation
- GT2 conversion, etc
5. Still not up to snuff? Skys the limit

IMO
This.

Any time anything is changed from stock, you first confirm stock condition. Otherwise there is a good chance you'll be putting elbow grease and $$$ into a turd. If the OP had lots of 996 experience and thought the present tt was worse, or if the cars history was known, it might be different.
The first thing I'd do is get a good tech or someone intimately familiar with the 996 (or both) to drive/check the car. Then begin making changes.

I'll likely swap fluid in mine as well so this is helpful. Mine isn't notchy and nearly all play has now been removed. I may raise the shift handle up some for more leverage but for now it feels better than it did, a shame all of that billet is hidden away!

I had a custom boot done for mine while I was at it and I think it came out pretty good! Andrew over at Zealous Interiors used my old boot as a template and made it from Alcantra. Check it out!

It was a little tight at the top but he has explained how I could loosen it some. I'm happy with it!

theres a 997 shift **** and boot on rennlist for 60$. remove the boot save the shift ****. fold your 996 boot inside out slide the **** in and tie wrap it. now you have a great shift **** to go with the great shift boot!

Update: Still having shifting issues. Still very stiff to get into first gear, and getting some grinding in certain gears.
  • Dealer changed trans fluid
  • Dealer adjusted shifter cables

Car is back over at Jim Ellis Porsche.

It randomly grinds between 2000-2500 RPM in these gears.

1st to 2nd
2nd to 3rd
3rd to 4th

You can rest assured I am not the kind of person to run out and start modifying anything. I've got 8 yards of dirt in the driveway to move, a generator to install on the sailboat and a business to run. The shifter is rather low on the list.

I had a PPI done by a Porsche Motorsports outfit and the two guys who drove the car pointed out all the flaws, the shifter was not one of them. Yep, drives like a Porsche was the gist of their feedback.

The only other Porsche driving experience I have is a friend's 996, as I noted in an earlier post. His clutch is quite heavy, but the car shifts just fine. His clutch is so heavy that his wife can't/won't drive, but that is a whole nother topic.

I have no doubt this car is just being itself and is just fine. It is a hoot to drive. The reason for my original post was in comparing my Audi shifting experience to the TT. The Audi is like butter, the Porsche is like a bag of potatoes. I've owned the Audi since it was new, it has 126,000 miles on it and I can assure you that nobody has ever changed the gear oil or suggested that it needs a new $900 shifter to make it feel right. Yet my $100,000+ world class sports car might need both. Seems odd to me, but I love everything else.

I think this is what is called a first world problem.

I am going to change the gear oil soon and report back. I know you are all on the edge of your seats just waiting to hear the outcome and I'll get to it very soon. I promise.

Chris

^ love it, first world problem indeed, but you're absolutely right. often times to have this once 130k+ sports car shift properly, the oil needs to be fresh and the shifter could be changed.

we should all have these problems

6th gear is for when you have 60 miles to travel to the next filling station, and the "Miles Left" indicator is showing 50 miles.

Hi Chris,
Yeah... I'm in business for myself, restoring an old farmhouse and adjacent buildings, have 2 teenage girls with music, volleyball, etc etc. Not to mention SWMBO. Know how it is.

I was actually replying more to support ard as many other posters were just shouting 'throw money at it'. Sounds like you have a plan. Hope it's not anything serious and your P enjoyment continues for a long time to come.
