Can you elaborate on what spring you are talking about. I looked at the parts catalogue and don't see any spring on or around the clutch pedal. Thanks

Here's some discussion about this spring https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ch-assist.html

Removing this spring really improved clutch feel for me. I bought a lighter spring to replace it but my cruise activates just fine and my pedal stays up so I've not put one back in. YMMV but I think if the clutch is difficult to feel for you that this will be helpful and it's easy to reverse if you change your mind.

So I removed the clutch pedal assist spring.....definitely better feel. Not to soft not to stiff. Cruise control switch no longer worked. I simply glued a small piece of rubber on the tip of the switch essentially extending the switch tip by about 1/8" ...works great.

Just a comment on the clutch assist spring....what an idiotic over engineered piece of crap. Totally unnecessary in my opinion. A simple spring would do the trick or simply make the switch bracket adjustable.

I think everybody should try with the spring removed. I think most will find it improves things. For the record I had no issues with my clutch/shifting. I simply felt the stroke was WAY to easy.

go to home depot and look for item # 684838. it consists of 2 springs. use 1 of them in place of the pen spring. just enough tension to allow the cruise control to work and no worry about the glued piece falling off

Thanks, I had bought those springs as well at HD... I'm all set. The piece of rubber I glued on is like a cap it would hold even without the glue. I never use the cruise control anyway. If the piece were to fall off, the cruise control simply would disengage. There is no way I'm re installing that ridiculous spring system.

I love the way the advice here is "mod" and "mod to the most expensive possible"

OP buys an unknown used car, compains about shifts...and the solution is Numeric. Please.

1. Is your car operating properly.
- Shifter
- Shifter Cables
- Trans Mount
- Motor Mounts
- Tranny fluid
2. Consider a mild update 997shifter
3. Maybe a 997ssk? Depending on what you dont like
4. Rule out clutch actuation in your complain of "shifting"
- Consider mods the the clutch actuation
- GT2 conversion, etc
5. Still not up to snuff? Skys the limit

IMO

good advice ^ especially given the first five on the list have probably never been touched, and could always use replacement lol

since the most "expensive" mod would be a sequential shifter i would reply with why not? at 37k mileage and having another porsche owner drive the car it is certainly plausible that the poem shifter just six. much like a 997 or 997 ask sux in comparison to a numeric. i had a ssk in my car before the numeric and they aren't even in the same league. any shifter built into a plastic housing that moves when shifted fast and hard will never compete with a billet aluminum housing. plain and simple. as for the gt2 conversion either evokes or em setup is much more $ than a numeric. the other are more maintenece and can certainly help but hardly what the op is complaining about since he is familiar with manuals and owned several. just my .02

Well, I've continued to drive the car. I have no issue at all with the clutch. I've been driving a stick for way too long to let the clutch pedal be a source of problem. They are all different and all engage differently. Short learning curve there, no big deal. I haven't even looked for the helper spring, it really isn't an issue.

My complaint is a little more nuanced and hard to describe. This car just doesn't feel great when going from gear to gear. It gets to every gear, I don't really miss any shifts, it just feels clunky at the point of oncoming gear engagement. Going slowly, hold a little pressure against the next gear and it pops in. Power shifting from 1-2 still gets there, but it has a very slight catch prior to fully seating. No big deal, it gets there, but doesn't feel great.

In my mind I've eliminated a misaligned shifter or bad cable. The 1-2 shift, if my memory of what the inside of a transmission looks like, is using the same fork. Straight down from 1-2 is a pretty basic move, nothing to really screw up.

But honestly, I haven't taken the time to get into the cables and shifter or even look to see what is there. But I can see how swapping out the gear oil with some fresh gear oil might allow for a smoother synchronization of the gears. And that will be the first thing I try when I get there.

The dialog has been great, I appreciate everyone's comments. I think this internet thing is going to start catching on.

Chris

chris, if you'll allow me to suggest, before you think anything else through or even contemplate all the five things ( above e.g. mounts/t-mount- cables/shifters ) than can cause rough or imprecise shifting? there is really nothing at all to talk about ( though we all will lol ) until such time as you've switched out the gearbox oil. i suggest you go with redline 75/90 if stock; or delvac if your car has an lsd and won't adjust well to the friction modifiers in most g'box oils.

..and you're right on point re the clutch and it's "normal" engagement point(S)! while you're right it's a five min adjustment as in "i have a new to me manual shift car" lol ) the idiosyncratic nature of the hydruallically assisted clutch system replete with toilet bowl accumulator and oft leaking clutch slave will take some personal mettle as well as patience along that unusual learning curve to successfully navigate it. but you'll be fine.

change the trans oil and tell us how it helped,.. and good luck.

I don't care what the corvette guys say, you guys are all right!

As was mentioned above, the car's history is unknown to me. I have no idea if anyone has modified the transmission to include lsd, but I'm going make the assumption that it is stock. And replace with the linked 90 delvac.

Now if one of you could kindly point me to the thread that has all the pictures and write up of replacing gear box oil... I am prepared to be amused by some overly complicated method of draining oil from 6 different locations, including one behind the stereo and one behind the alternator.

drain plug is under the diff, fill plug halfway up the side of the trans. 1 jug fills both. tip. remove the fill before removing the drain! i use a clean 1 qt container and a filler pump from auto zone

if your feeling froggy unbolt the drivers side axle drop it down and remove the side plate. you can then see inside the diff and know if its a lsd or not
