Rainy days or car wash belt makes noise

I daily drive my car. Sometimes , well during this season it rains almost every other day. What really bugs me is that our rear hatch has holes. So rain drips inside. When i start the car i hear squak for split sec. Probably gets wet. Moisture. Car is parked a little bit up hill. Maybe more rain gets in there. It started making sounds even after car wash. I dont think it did that with the old belt. Im runing belt from gates. I checked all the pulleys i always do that. My car just hates the rain i guess i see some people with simiar sympthoms and belt!noises. Some say to use wd40. Are you guys having same problem ?

Same here. Here in sunny Germany <cough> the belt gets wet and on start up it squeals like a pig for a second. I use a gate belt too and just changed to it. With the old stock belt i had some freaking altonator and battery failure messages, cause this belt was old and needed to be replaced. So i guess its normal.

Mine does it as well after washing the car. Not sure about rain because my car doesn't ever see rain here in AZ. It's been like that as long as I can remember. I think the belt is slipping a bit because sometimes i can feel it in the steering, so I assume the power steering pump is not getting engaged. I just try to dry everything in the engine area as best as possible after washing.

Same here in Florida! Every time, all the time, after a rain or a car wash. New Porsche belt, still happens. Volt meter drops to 12V for about 30 second.

That's actually cool idea, I'm going to use leaf blower next time, I think what happens, IS belt slips, it creates that noise- water gets on top of the pulley and it drips down, so when you start the car belt slips for a second before it catch up and clean the water away.

I was actually thinking to create/make rear hatch cover (if it rains, you just install the cover ) its not just because of belt making noise but also to protect the top engine from washing the car or when the car is sitting outside while its raining, even after washing i hate to open the hatch when its dripping water everywhere and i have to use rag's to clean it.

Mine does it after washing. Air conditioning compressor is worst offender for me. I make sure air conditioner is turned off prior to starting after wash and then a short drive to dry everything before turning it back on.

I lay an old towel over the motor when washing (don't get it stuck in the latch!)
This catches most of the water. Towel is soaked.

Not much exposure to rain where I live but yes, if the rain is heavy enough and if accompanied by wind some water gets on the pulleys/belt and the belt slips some upon engine start.

I can tell because the voltage gage reading is low since the belt is not turning the alternator. Also, once in a while the belt chirps or squeaks.

Running the stock (factory) belt.

Normal.

Just be aware of it and let the engine idle normally and avoid adding any extra electrical/accessory load until the pulleys/belt dry out which should take just a few seconds, though after a particularly heavy rain last year -- the only heavy rain of the year -- the belt slipped for around 30 seconds.

Also, I observe this belt slippage after a washing. I don't do anything special when I wash the car other than I'm aware the engine lid lets water through so I avoid flooding that area with water.

I always drive the car, run the engine enough to get it quite up to temperature to ensure all the moisture is gone from the belt, pulleys, and engine in general (and the brakes are dry too after a wash).

Might as well mention that once or twice in addition to the slippage the engine misfired a bit at engine start. I just rear the codes and clear them and drive the car. The engine has never misfired at any other time so I do not worry about it.

yes, I do the same...... a large beach towel in the bay over the intake and components, etc..... it really helps.. the one time I got stuck in torrential downpour in my cab I also noticed this noise when starting her up. Totally normal...

I wouldn't do that while motor is still hot as the fan may run or fire hazard. After its cool I guess you could but kinda a pain lo.

Having read about this issue on the forum before my purchase, I have always been extra careful to not point the car wash wand towards the engine cover. Since I wash all around the slats of the cover, there will inevitably be some mist/over spray that finds its way onto the grille/slats. After done with the wand, I gently wipe the slats with soft wipes to complete the 'washing' of the car's exterior.

Afterwards, I checked inside the engine compartment the first couple of washes, and never found any significant amount of water in there, and certainly not in the air filter housing. No squeaks either upon engine start-up.

Guess I've been lucky; maybe that might work for some of you.

P.S. Careful when lifting the engine cover, as that in itself can lead to some water dripping into the engine bay; just crack it open a little to check, if you want.
