LED Tail lights or stock on your 996?
What do you prefer?
I actually think I prefer the stock look. A few years ago when I realized the OE tail lights on the turbo would break and had very weak mounting points I actually looked for a replacement of sorts. I was hoping there was a knockoff made in China that was better made than the OE. The only thing I could find were promises of LED tail lights in the works.
Now that nearly every new car on the road has LED running lights and Kia's and Hyundai's sport LED tail lights as well as older Civics and everything else has been retrofitted with them, my OE stockers look more appealing to me.
I'm not at all against customizing or modding, that's how I have made my living the last 40 years and it's afforded me a nice lifestyle. I do however think the 996 Turbo is a classic and from an era prior to LED everything. It has a cozy classic comfortable interior and lots of subtle curves that are fitting with the warm glow of incandescent bulbs. I find it comfortable and fitting for the era. It's right for me!

I was originally on board for the LED tails.
However, the more I think about it the more it reminds me of all those beautiful early 911 longhoods that were converted over to the "newer turbo look" in the early to mid 1980's.
No thanks.
I don't own a 997tt, a 991, a CGT, or a 918...I own a 2003 Porsche 996 twin turbo and I'm damn proud about it. I don't need or want it to look like anything else.
Upgrading the 996tt's performance to the best of it's capabilities is a more noble goal imho.

I think I'll look into swapping out the OEM bulbs with LEDs. I haven't seen that discussed much.

OEM tail lights just look proper. Aftermarket tail lights have their own charm, but look like a caricature of the original design. Even the .1 997 aftermarket led tail lights look silly even though they look very similar to .2 997 oem led tail lights

I'll be curious to see how your bulb swap turns out. Good luck, V.

i'm putting on led taillights as soon as someone ships them to me. no need to concern myself with "car correct" concerns. i can't stand the dinginess of my old oems with the busted tabs. if they look like shyte i'll buy newer lenses and try fitting them with LEDS
was a good alternative idea!.. if it works !?
