Creaking noise going over bumps and turning steering wheel
Creaking noise seems louder inside the cabin than outside. Sounds like it is coming from the middle/front. The symptoms happens when:
1. Going slow over uneven pavement. Even when I am in neutral and rolling through uneven pavement, it will make this noise
2. Braking and slowly accelerating from/at lower speeds
3. Turning the steering wheel left and white as demonstrated in the video.
I've attached a small video clip. Can anyone help pinpoint where this creaking noise is coming from? The car has 57,000 miles on original suspension.

^1 above. just went thru this and eliminated a similar creaking by just switching out the bearing/backing plates ( $50 ea) that are directly under the top mounts. i also have new top mounts in box but am going to try again my new tarett camber plates that..
it'll be oem or the taretts once i decide which is more ideal for me. but as others in here just told me, and slider just said above. check the top mounts and assorted hardware and assembly first. it'll save ya some time.

Just for reference my finally eliminating all noises from the front required replacing with new OEM top mounts along with the bearing backing plates.
The tarett camber plates don't seem to be a workable solution for my car. I'm still unclear as to why, but man, were they noisy.

Congrats! I finally stopped all my noises by replacing the trailing arms! I have 92,000miles and ZERO RATTLES AND CLUNKS! It's amazing what throwing money and parts at a high mileage German car can achieve...lol
Same issue here. The boots on the ball joint, on the lower control arms were torn (probably when a previous owner installed the coil-overs). This allow debris to get into the joint and cause the noise.
I replaced the lower control arms and the noise is gone.

I fabbed up a rubber bushing that I inserted around the Tarret part so the spring was tightly secured and could not move. It worked like a charm. Funny, I only had to do this on the passenger side.
I just went through this too... New Tarett shock mounts - the problem is that they don't secure the OEM spring tightly. It is free to move around. When it does, it makes a metal on metal clunk that sounds quite scary.

holy cr*p slider, you're a genius. would you believe I put these things on/off FOUR times in the last couple weeks only to finally give up and went OEM!
i'm not gonna fabricate anything. not even a story lol. rep pts for you man..
agree. imagine my surprise when they just click/clunk/bind and it IS the spring movement to which slider alluded. very strange way to fab a part made specifically for a 996 turbo. i'll go without the add'l -1 neg camber, thanks lol
sheesh.
sheesh.

job well done. i feel much the same way.
