Another /Drive video projecting 996tt values rising
I think 996TT's are holding their values well over the last couple of years, but he's 5-10k off on price. A 35k 996tt is gonna have high miles, accidents or too many useless mods etc.,
Most of what I've seen is in the 40's at least even for an 01.

And likely a Tiptronic.
From the looks of it almost every car these guys mention in episodes like this start to creep up in price within 6 months following. There are just so many 996TTs available, plus the general buyer doesn't know about option packages, etc. You could have 2 Turbos, both the same year, both the same mileage...but with original MSRPs up to $60K apart.
Here is what needs to happen:
1) More time passes, this is still a relatively new car
2) In that time, more cars need to crap out or be totaled
3) Enough time has to pass that the newer 997.1TT starts to rise in price (a rising tide raises all ships)
4) Those priced out of the 997.1TT will then look to the quirky 996TT
5) Lower mileage, higher optioned, and better kept/documented cars will rise to the top

Yea, maybe a year ago. Prices are already on the rise, even a half-decent tip is not in the low $30k range.

I think the rising of the air-cooled prices is whats going to keep us level, I don't think they will be appreciating anytime soon tho but compared to when I was looking a couple of years back, 997's are still depreciating.
Once the untapped potential is realized, combined with more affordable mods, the 996 should follow a similar price pattern to the mk4 supra.

Did they make more of the 996 turbos than the 997's?

I'm not saying it makes sense to keep a car for twenty years for financial gain as it rarely does but there are some younger people here that will be saying I remember when you could have bought a 996tt for 30-40= they will be a 100k in 20 years.
I think long term value, think 10-15yrs, will be more determined by condition instead of miles or mods and how fresh motor and trans are just like a cup car. My car looks a little race out now with it's gt3 RS wing and CCW wheels but have the stock parts and would look bone stock in a hours work. Short long term 3-5yrs miles will mean a lot. But I bought mine to drive, paid cash and have enjoyed more miles than the original owner. I could throw it way if it broke and loose less than he did buying it new. The fact that it is still worth what I paid less mods is just a bonus.
Not that the 996tt will ever become a solid collectable but condition and mileage is everything and unless a race or special history car mods are frowned upon. Most of these are ridden hard and put away wet which will make a clean car in 20 years rare. Most people here do not care about value and buy to mod and run the snot out of and that's fine= its their money!
