I'd be running 10w60 if it was readily available/cost friendly...running Castrol 5w50 instead.
0w40 is not the same the same viscosity as 5w40, nor 10w40...in theory the hot viscosity is the same but they rarely/never are in real-world...
Mark is happy with what he's running, because it works...nuff said...
Cheers,

My moms brother's uncle's cousin had a dad that owned a Ferrari and was Italian; he said to only use La Oil cold pressed olive oil on my Focaccia bread. So if that is good enough for him and what he recommends I would be silly to ignore his recommendation!

These oil threads are always so chalk full of so much empirical data and testing... One guy with one car says this high quality oil worked so much better; BUT WAIT he just did not use that oil in his own car, he put it in his wife's Rav4 once too. And he heard that was the best thing he could do for his cars engines from 5 other guys in another thread on engine oil!

Who's other stuff is a bit over the top, the other posters or mine

If mine just know that my rant is based solely on the fact that my ovaries are a little sore from the fact that it was a gorgeous weekend here in Canada and I sat in my hanger all weekend wishing I could be flying with my buddies but I was ground with insurance that did not come through in time --> and now I can fly but it's cloudy and snowing. I know my first world problems are GIANT.

If you're doing olive oil and balsamic make sure you shred a little Parmesan on it too

There is a CST range at 100C for which an oil must fall under to be considered a 40wt. There are oils that are on the thick and thin end (and the W viscosity is not necessarily and indication of where an oil will fall at hot CST).

Some oils shear more than others, but again, thats based on the oil, not the W viscosity. A ****ty 10w-40 could end up with a thinner hot viscosity than an outstanding 0w-40.

Cheers,
Rob,
How do you like the Castrol 5w50, does the engine seem quieter and use less oil with it ?

Hey Jim,
I believe it is quieter on the Castrol Edge 5w50 then it was on 5w40 Rotella T6, both being much quieter than Mobil1 0w40.
Only have ~1000k on the Castrol 5w50 so far, no consumption.
On Rotella T6, experience 1-2 bars(0.25-0.5L) of consumption over 5000km change interval.
Another 996tt I ran on T6 and now the Castrol sees the same benefit and similar consumption.
Also on my dad's DD e39 540i, used some oil and had lifter clatter with track use on Mobil 0w40, 'no' consumption and quiet engine on Rotella T6 since...
Cheers,
Rob

So, so far so good...looks promising. I might give it a shot next oil change, besides Mark swears by it.
Cheers

i do indeed. should be changing again over the weekend. doesnt "need" it at 2950 since last change, but oil is cheaper than motors

edit: it is a curiosity that mobil M1 5/50 is on the porsche approved list as is the 5/40 castrol edge but the castrol 5/50 is conspicuous in it's absence from the list.
still i'm going with it's "ok" to use. i am curious to notice any difference btw a full 5/50 fill vs my 50/50 mix of 5/40 and the 5/50. the car purrs with that blend lol
