Auxiliary fan under the "hood"

Soooo I have tried searching "auxiliary fan" "engine fan" "slim line fan" etc with little to no luck.

I have been trying to find what CFM our fans are rated at as I would like to get a slim line fan to replace the stock one.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
-Scott

Is there a need to "upgrade" from the stock fan? I have been wondering for a while now if there is an aftermarket unit that will move more air.

The stock one seems to move enough air. No one I can recall has ever posted an issue that can be traced to the lack of air flow from the stock engine compartment fan.

I know some owners after a hard run like to raise the engine compartment lid which is just the wrong thing to do.

If you want some extra engine compartment cooling margin be sure the 2nd engine compartment fan fuse (C5 and 5A IIRC) is installed. With this fuse installed the engine compartment fan runs all the time the engine is on not just when the engine compartment temperature gets to a high enough temperature.

Thanks Macster!

I want to replace the stock fan since it no longer fits with an upgraded Y pipe. Sooooo its more of what type of fan should I put in?

I was thinking of running either a single fan like this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sp...0394/overview/ (if it puts out enough flow) OR just redesign something under the whole "hood" and do a twin setup and form a bit of aluminum to support.

Thoughts??

I've put quite a few electric fans in front engine cars, always figured depth etc and made my own brackets. I have used summit many times= not always the cheapest but reputable/good service.

I have it from a few good friends that these Spal fans are AWESOME compared to a lot of the other fans out on the market. One of them has his twin spal fan setup basically 2 inches from his downpipe and this is the only company that has not "been cooked" due to heat, so I may give it a shot?

Mine looks more like this

This is not my car but similar. If you would like a photo of the exact placement it would have to wait until tomorrow. Moreover the stock fan will not fit / :

whichever fan you choose make sure its a puller fan not a pusher fan. that way it pulls the air in to cool the engine

I was pretty sure that the fan in the engine bay is actually pulling air out?!? It was funny the Porsche dealership (both service and parts) was little to no help in several questions regarding this system.

in retrospect i suppose it doesn't matter which way it goes since the engine bay is open on top and bottom as long as it moves the air according to the sensor the ventilate the bay

I've read about fan direction before and got the impression the direction has changed over the years. To me blowing out makes the most sense since heat rises and drawing cool air from underneath makes sense. That said, most of the aftermarket slimline fans tend to be junk. Unless that Y-pipe is some kind of special that's the part I'd probably be swapping.

No. The fan air direction should be down.

If the fan is running when the car is moving if the fan is blowing up air pressure over the engine compartment lid is working against the fan. Too little air flow might be the result and engine compartment temps might get too hot.

When the car is stopped the fan wants to blow down to blow the hottest air, that around/from the exhaust system including those big old heaters, the turbos, down and out.

If the fan pulls air up and out this pulls the hot air up through the engine compartment and heats the very items the fan is there to help keep cool.

If the stock fan will no longer fit/work because of intake mods I have no alternative to recommend.

You will have to find someone who has solved this problem, probably someone who also has installed the same intake system you have installed.
