Question about oil and oil consumption....

I got my car last week and have put about 400 fairly hard miles on her. I have been watching the oil via the onboard computer and is now below half way. The car has 8800 miles and I don't know what oil was used in her previously. Do I get an oil change now so I know what oil to fill up with or should I just throw in some Mobil 1 0-40? Also, I am in NY and heading into winter. The car will be stored for most of the winter but will be driven until the snow and salt cover the roads. What oil is recommended for colder temps? Sorry for th newb questions and I did a search that was inconclusive.

If your car is 04 model year then the oil change isnt due for two years or 12k. Before that it was 1year or 10k. If it is an earlier model then you may as well go for an oil change, otherwise top it up with some mobil1 0-40. Thats what its filled with at the factory.

It is an '02 and the manual says 15k. Do you guys all go to the dealer for oil changes or independant shops?

I'd get it changed immediately. If you have a good independant with good references, I'd go with them.

Do one now as your starting reference point. Then change it once per year unless you do major track or dusty condition driving.

If you don't change your oil and plan to top it off... you might want to check with Ruf. Maybe they use a different weight or recommend different intervals.

My Oil change Preferences!!

Hi Griza,

I bought my '03 TT used with 4500 miles.

I changed the oil/filter immediately as I was told that when you change the oil in a TT you only change 50% each time, even if you drain the turbos, etc. Then I changed the oil/filter after 1500 miles again so as to upgrade all the oil in the system. I used 0-40 Mobil 1 per factory recommendation.

Additionally, I had the brake fluid flushed. In so doing I noticed a little brown fluid coming out. After the brake fluid change the brake pedal felt more firm when applied.

I used an independent shop locally that has worked on Porsches only for over 20 years.

Good Luck, if you need any oher input just ask.

Regards.

I didn't even think of that. I will call Ruf and see what they recommend. I made an appointment with my local Posche dealer just for this first time until I can find a good independant shop.

Bashy- I think I will hold off on the brake flush. The fronts were changed to Ruf fronts 4,000 miles ago. But that was 2 years ago as well so it might be a good idea.

Thanks guys once again!!!!!

Just got an email back from Ruf and they use stock fluids and oil. That makes my life much easier.

BCS- I will do l some stuff, change oil whatever, but since this the first time I want a pro to look at it make sure every thing is cool.

Change the oil every year. Cheap insurance.

Brake fluid every two years.
