Does this sound like a Rod gone ?

You're doing pretty much exactly what's on my future wish list for safety. If possible a light port on the heads would be worthwhile but the snowball will only grow if you start thinking along those lines :-O

No what u are describing here is most likely detonation. If it were valve train related or ims related u would hear it in every gear.U are under full load and able to build peak boost in those gears which is why it makes me think detonation.Maybe u got some bad fuel.

tim will want carrillo rods, racewear headstuds, 997 lifters, oem head gaskets and a gt3 oil pump. he will massage the heads, oring the cylinders and insect the liners and pistons for wear and clearance the oil pump. this will get you into 4 digit hp with proper fueling, turbos and tuning. once this is all done you will have to address the transmission axles and clutch

Had my local guy here who listened to the videos..... he says it could also be as simple as the water pump gone as it makes a similar sound when busto... it is a common problem here on the 996TT he says and I was fiddling about there the other day and had just topped up coolant the day before this all happened but I do not want to start it to check as it will be pulled apart anyway
going through some very recent datalogs it does show a higher than normal coolant temp but not dangerous... i did not log the other night though
we shall see

that IS basic engine build! same setup from 700 to 1000 hp. its the fueling and turbos, tuning that make the difference. from inside the motor its all the same when upgrading

I'm resurrecting this thread for the benefit of others with the similar issues as the OP did not post an update. Last month I had the exact same noise as in the video in post #9. I was fearing the worst, but it did turn out to be a bad water pump. Still a $1600 fix with parts and labor...!
Yeah I have not started her since the other night.
