Rattle at idle and low rpm ?

Hi Guys,
been a lurker here for way too long with not too many posts, but always check in for ideas / tips on my 911TT.
Now here's something which has been troubling me - I hope it's not a problem and is considered 'normal' for a 911TT.
At idle the engine sounds awful with all sorts of mechanical rattles - I'd like to think it's timing chain chatter, sure is loud though. Once the engine gets above about 1400rpm it largely goes away.
I've also notice a lot of transmission noise up to about 30mph - most noticable when driving thru' tunnel. Again is this to be expected ?
I'm a little wary as the original engine was replaced at 7000miles and this replacement at 7,000 miles while smooth and strong makes all these noises.
FYI the original engine was replaced due to a porus casing.
Thanks Tim

Unfortunately the mechanical noises at idle are normal, some cars are worse than others. It is the intermediate shaft rattling at idle speed. As far as I know there is no fix for this. There should be no transmission noises like you describe. Are you sure it's coming from the tranny?

Unfortunately the noise at idle and low rpm is normal. The transmission noise I don't know about. I don't have it on my car. Maybe more people will chime in?

Cool

I was told this noise is just the scavenger oil pump on the TT ... is that correct?

Sounds like a loose right tailpipe rattle at idle especially when the car is warm.

Comments?

when i first got mine i thought it was a heat shield or something, but it makes an aweful racket at idle which slowly improves when warm, my brother says it sounds like a bucket of bolts. I talked to the dealer, they told me its normal and nothing can be done about it, i just ignore it now, crank up the radio.

Dont know about the tranny though.

I'm wondering if a louder exhaust might hide the rattle more... anyone want to comment on that?

yep idle rattle is normal, longitudinal endplay on intermediate shaft. dealers say it is in spec and will not do anything about it, i tried on my '01. Make sure when you go to the dealer you have them document it so it is on record. I tend to mention it whenever i go to the dealer to establish a record history. You never know if something does happen and there is a history they might help you out. I does kind of sound like a loose shield or something.

variable, that was my thinking as well and the Fabspeed exhaust does nicely to drown out noises.

As far as the trans, are you sure its in trans? It sounds funny but i had an AWD car that made a trans problem-like noises and turned out to be the tires !

It is normal and some have it more than others.. My first 996TT in 02 was loud as hell with that. My new 05TTS is almost as loud as the 02.. I would bring your car in to get looked at as far as that transmission noise is concerned.

The Turbo engine is a bit rough/ragged when started from cold. I hear mine backfiring some through the exhaust. The engine is being fed extra fuel to be burnt in the converters to warm them up quicker.

Additionally the low valve lift is enaged and this makes for a bit more noise.

If I let the engine idle a while the idle smooths out, the engine quiets down, and the RPMs drop to near normal hot idle speed.

Be sure the oil level is good. Be sure the oil is not too old. These engines can really dump a lot of contaminates in the oil -- courtesy of the turbo charging -- and this dilutes the oil and can make the engine more noisy. Even though I change the oil every 5K miles in my Turbo (and my other Porsche) the engine is noticeably quieter after an oil change even after the fresh oil gets up to temperature.

I would not run some 15w-50 oil. I do not see it a suitable trade off to perhaps get a quieter engine -- though the noise is normal -- at the expense of running a sub-par and unsuitable oil that exposes all the engine to the risk of accelerated wear/tear possibly even damage arising from inadequate lubrication.
