Reverse Lights

With the recent acquisition of a 2001 996 Turbo in auto (tip), I've stumbled onto a problem. I've read up on this a bit and tried to figure it out, but I don't believe I've come across an individual mentioning the same symptom.

When I put the car into reverse, the reverse bulbs both turn on for half a second, then turn back off, and stay off for the remainder of the car being in reverse.

Is this curable by replacing this reverse sensor that I've read about that is located on the transmission, or under the gear lever on tip models?

Check wiring for loose connections worn areas, more than likely reverse sensor.
