Spoke to EPL today regarding the readiness codes in their tune (as I have an EPL 91 tune). They have told me that California may do a hard reset on the spot with your readiness codes. If EPL were to hard code a pass in there for readiness codes, then the smog testers may see that immediately on their screen and flag the car in the system for the next place that may test it.

In other words, if EPL puts a hard coded 'PASS' for o2, catalytic converter efficiency, secondary air injection, etc - when the smog shop resets it (if they decide to), they will ALWAYS expect to see a 'FAIL' because of how the DME adapts and collects data to give it a 'PASS'. With a hard coded 'PASS' showing after reset, it will establish that the DME/ECU has been modified, and who knows maybe they won't let you register it until you can show otherwise? I'm not quite sure about the last part, but it's a crapshoot as it is California.

Just a heads up.

exactly right re the handheld obd reader. mines just an el cheapo 40$ actron. does what i need it to! i think having even the simple obd reader plugged in prior is the real "readiness monitor" lol. i'll never even pull in without one first. but i'm dyin to hear you were able to reset them at least.

pls keep us posted..its not getting any easier out here...

This.

I read up on the SB350 bill you brought up a page or two back on this thread. Interesting no doubt.

Isn't that the truth! I'm having my turn with this fun now. Even though my car passed with flying marks 2 yrs ago under the old sniffer protocol.

I have all my readiness monitors good except for converter efficiency. Trying to figure out if it's my exhaust by putting stock one back on (when I can find some moutings straps!#$). If it's not that, then I'll have to figure out what to do with my flash tune.

Don't bother with the stock exhaust if it's going to cost you. Do you know what tune you have? I had the same problem, flashed to stock and passed no problem with my aftermarket exhaust. The tuner (EPL) set me up with a new tune that allows the monitors to be ready and is smoother then the old one.

piece of advice if you do end up removing the exhaust? try to locate a set of 02's and swap those FIRST! if you have a "cat not ready". as it's a helluva lot easier than flashing back and forth the tune ( which unless its EPL and the o2's have in fact been "coded out"?? ) it should NOT be. i have never heard of the tune being the issue ( except the OLD ( i would hope?! ) EPL. ( not at ALL EPL bashing, presumably this was their answer to 100 cel cats or catless before the obd and sniffer were used in tandem ?) we all know as well out "here", it's ALL about the OBD "readiness" and the visual, and VERY little else.

Replaced all the O2 sensors after one was found to be faulty.

Smog station tech told me to drive it about 500 miles and all should be well.

He has been seeing more issues with the "not ready".

I will be contacting EPL too during the week.

...hmm, anyone else detect a pattern here

my tune is 15 years old for cry in out loud. new exhaust has 200 cel cats from europe ( not romania though?! ) i dont think they are even possibly hjs cats because the LOW cost of the kline would make that near impossible to explain. i passed after resetting after knowing i wasn't initially ready. and forgive me as i am repeating myself when apologizing for posting the same sh*t over and over.

you try "retirement" and how YOU like it. hah!

add: 500 miles is utter BS. i did it in 40 tops.

When I brought my Unicorn in from Alabama to Cali it had a Softronics tune and an Agency Power exhaust. For kicks, I brought it to my smog guy of 10 years. His tech took one look at the exhaust and said "no way, I can't even test it". Luckely, my car came with the stock exhaust. Softronics told me to go to hell with respect to getting my stock tune back. I swapped the exhaust and then off to the dealer for a stock flash. After that, I went to a new, cheaper smog station and passed.

Got to swapping the exhaust today. Something that's actually easy peasy to service on this car for once! Waiting for some band clamps to come so I can mount the stockies tomorrow.

My car only has 44k miles. While I won't completely rule out the O2's or tune, I'm taking this one step at a time.

Though this might just be my opportunity to throw some injectors and new tune (in place of the 5bar fpr) in there to pair with my early gen Tial A28s as a present for all this hassle.

Any updates? Curious if the EPL tune is able to fool CA smog.

So I verified that it is indeed my tune that prevents my catalytic monitor from being "ready". My Fabspeed V3's have the high end HJS cats, so that was never the problem. But I still put my stock exhaust back on just to be sure, and yes, same.

Just want to say that I'm not interested in cheating CA smog. As mentioned earlier, my past SMOG 2 yrs ago showed that my car passes the sniff test with flying colors.

Decided to go with the Cobb Accessport at this point to flash back to a good base tune.
