Tial alpha 2871 failure (580 total miles since install) = damaged engine
This is just a follow up to my original thread about my blown turbos.
It's official. Steel flakes are present. The engine is unoperable.
The extent of the damage is unknown until we tear the engine apart for analysis.
Not too happy about this.

Its hard to believe steel flakes could make their way thru the intercoolers !!! Bit worrying really. I've only ever had the exhaust wheels fail or get damaged before never a comp wheel. Always worth running a filter in the feed line as well incase you lose a motor the debris doesn't get into the turbo cartridge.

seem to recall reading of a number of upgrades of your pre catastrophically imploded car. sucks man. would be instructive if we were privy to details of the parts as well as chronology of the install. but also understand not wanting to list all that sh*t too. either way, really sucks.. sorry to hear.
TiAL rebuilt the turbos ($) and the car is on a carrier to Vegas to meet up with Sean at Silly Rabbit for a full engine teardown.
BBI and GMG never returned my calls. I even drove over to BBI's shop (got the tour) and left my contact info. Sad.
Plan is to see, if any, damage occurred and to clean out the metal flake.
Brandon at SMS European baroscoped the engine and confirmed the flakes...not just aluminum....steel. This means something other than the shrapnel is floating around. Flakes can be seen in the plenum, silicone hoses, etc.
Oil filter does show flakes. Unfortunately, Robert at Auto Strasse in Costa Mesa didn't do as I asked and filter for or keep any of the shrapnel he found as he took off the turbos/intercoolers/drained oil/etc which makes any analysis of the shrapnel weight moot.
Depending on (lack of) damage, I might keep it a 3.6 but if the engine has to come apart, the idea of going 3.8 or 3.9 is an possible option. If that is the case, I can go with bigger turbos and will put my newly rebuilt TiAL Alpha 2871's up for sale.
With SEMA going on in a few weeks it will be a while until I hear anything back.
Setup wise...the car got everything done pretty much all at once. Check my SIG for loadout.

you are in good hands by all accounts. good luck man. we all share your angst. bummer. hang in there.
add: well, if you DID have to rebuild from the ground up? 3.8-4.0. worse things could happen!

3.8 from 3.6 is ezpeazy. once you go bigger your talking custom rods crank etc. really not worth the bang for the buck since its only felt off boost. you can see approx 40 hp for the 3.8 its reasonably priced and worth the juice. anything more and it becomes less steetable and more tear down inspections needed
