Well parts are rolling in for my first round of the build this winter. Motor and trans are coming out and trans is coming apart. The motor is not getting a rebuild this year but hopefully next winter I can do that then push the power to 800+whp
Thing is I would like to only take the trans apart once if we can. I'm adding a wavetrac diff and have a 2nd gear pop out issue. From my reading it sounds like upgrading 3rd gear is something a guy should do as well.
Just need to know what parts I should get and where to get them. Thanks for the help guys. The car is going to be pretty sick in the spring, I'm excited.
997GT2 1-3 main shaft, Guard LSD, gearbox cooler, 996cup shift lever. About $8-10k. The 7GT2 taller gears are a must in my opinion. So is the 996Cup shift lever and a no brainer as the part is only $100 and installs in minutes with the gearbox case off. This will reduce shift throws by 30% and give you a more direct feel. Unless you're doing 30 minute advanced level sessions on a road course, a gearbox cooler is not necessary. Certainly not needed for straight line runs. Skipping that will save you $2-2.5k. Anyway you cut it, be readily for a $5k bill at a minimum.

Well I have a wavetrac lsd that's going in so no guardian, better option for my driving. I already have a short shifter in the car but yes they will feel to long so the cup leveler I'd do.
As for the gears and the main shaft, where can I get them? Local shop who is a friend is doing the work on the trans so labor is not a killer just the parts are. I'm already at 12k in parts for this winters build so I don't want to go crazy here. Just enough to handle the higher hp later.
Car is a weekend warrior and toy. Does a little of everything, autox, track, drag, and spirited road driving.
gt2 parts from suncoast porsche or sonnen. the billet parts are from california motorsports
you can also try http://www.guardtransmission.com as they build gear sets and more for the modded transmission. i have never used them but hear very good things about all of their products.
no matter how you go about it your looking at 5k$ minimum in parts. add the time and knowledge needed for the proper shimming and reinstall its no job for the inexperienced. this is a high dollar part and you really want a 1 and done job. i have randys built transmission and it was in and out 3 times for rebuilds due to shoddy workmanship . the large nut on the end of one of the gear sets wasn't torqued properly and did 6000$ in damage
I'm not which is the bigger nightmare, opening up the engine or opening up the transmission! Getting the shims right for second gear and using the correct spec seems critical but I've never seen the information posted anywhere.

This is no job for a friend unless he has years of experience with these boxes. Well worth it for you to ship it out to an experienced builder like Cervelli, Rader, etc.

Well I'm not to worried about Matt doing the work properly in the trans but that's just more than I can afford this year. Cup car lever, lsd, and detent might be all I will do them and then build the trans when I do the motor since I'll have to pull it out again.
I just figured if we had to open it up I'd do what I can but 5k in parts is just to much.

I would spend money on the gearbox before the motor. Might not give you bragging rights but people always go apeshiat about dumping money in the engine and leaving the gearbox basically stock. The taller 997GT2 gearing will give you a lot of performance over stock. 3rd gear is about 30% wider and lot more durable to boot.

I agree if you on that. I'd do them at the same time but like said I just can't afford it this year if it's 5k just in parts. My bill by the time I'm done without it will be close to 20k.
I thought you could just do the 3rd gear and syncros and have a fairly good trans to 1000hp, or at least that kinda what I read

Taller 2nd is really where it's at. With a 7500 redline I get right at 90mph in 2nd gear which is huge especially with high hp applications.. The 7GT2 main shaft is relatively cheap, under $2k I believe with everything.

the wavetrac is only 1250 or thats what i paid and it just needs the gear lash specs to be "right" but its a horror story if your guy gets em "wrong".
for the gearbox cooler situation for the price ( cheap but maybe theres a reason if its not a pmna part!..? ) and there are more than just rader and guard for taller gear set combos as well. i sure wouldn't use that gbox detent but if you dont have 2nd gear pop? try the Ca motorsports arrester ( pic below ) or the 8MM ball bearing insert. both seem like more reliable preventatives. you'll love the wavetrac for a street car, even track it'll beat having none by a country mile lol

this entirely depends on the condition of the trans first. then it depends on your driving style. road racing autocross is much easier on the trans than hard launches at the drag strip.
