My WAG is it looks like a 996 Turbo front diff, viscous coupling with cardan shaft.

The 997 coupling is a wet clutch pack with the amount of engagement controlled by the DME. Thus I would expect to see some kind of a wiring harness connector on the diff/clutch pack housing.

Should be some part numbers on the hardware some place. Find them and write them down and google them.

If the above is for a 996TT why do they look different?

Looks like a 996 front diff with a 997 torque tube assembly bolted up to it. Not sure if thats an upgrade or if Porsche made any like that or why it would be done

Like mentioned above, if it is 997 front diff, it would have a wiring harness coming out right after the section where the 2 halves of the assembly bolt together.

it may be 997 C4s ... it used 996 style viscous coupling.

check to see if it has a small electric plug on it for the diff control.... that will be your answer.

If the part number matches a Turbo..go by the part number..BTW what is the part number? Do not go by the housing design, it is an updated housing, I made the parts department verify this once when I was doing a replacement years ago on a 996T that originally had the smooth type and the replacement was the skeleton type.
