ProEFI Problems to be AWARE of
ProEFI Problems to be AWARE of
When I was researching race/performance ECU options for my car I found that there wasn't much user info available online. The majority of what's out there comes from the manufacturers and the dealers/suppliers of the products.
So after experiencing ProEFI, having 12 months of problems and losing a whole racing season I have put my experience in a YouTube video that I hope is useful to other weekend track warriors.
I went with the ProEFI Pro112 ECU and have now ditched it in favour of a MoTec ECU, I do note that there are cars out there running ProEFI 128 ECUs and doing great on the track or drag strip and this was one of the key factors in me going with the ProEFI options. What pisses me off and as a business owner I don't understand is that ProEFI have released the Pro112 to the market promoting it as plug N play when it's not. It also was not and still is not ready to be released to the market internationally. If you are lucky enough to have a tuner near you that has worked with the ProEFI stuff then they may be able to sort through the problems with the Pro112. Mostly anyway, the quality issues with the harness are still unforgivable. Jason Seibels told me that they subcontract out the building of the harness . They clearly don't have any quality control process to check the harness as mine was a piece of crap. The measure of ProEFI is that they fail to stand by their product and fix faults or even to be able to identify them for that matter.

I'm in Perth, Western Australia and there is a lot of MoTec experience here so that should be OK but I agree there is a lot of work to make up the harness. That's why I went for the plug N play option (supposedly) from ProEFI. It's just such a shame that they have not created a quality product and that as a business they treat their customers so badly.
This makes me feel good
. I have a 112 I'm putting in my car in a week or so. Positive, it came out of a running g car and everything worked. Hopefully I don't have to mess with anything much. It is sad that the customer service issue is a problem though. That is very disappointing

My car is receiving a 128 box right now. I looked over the parts but didn't look closely at my harness pins, I truly hope they aren't hot glued as that makes adding pinouts near impossible if they've been glued over. A harness that wiggles the pins though is also a special kind of hell - been there with another box on a different car.
I looked over the 112 which was just coming out when I purchased and chose the 128 which I felt fit me better - more I/O for one thing. There was also more experience with the older box. One thing I've heard but not yet experienced is that some things can only be changed with dealer level software, I'm hoping that won't prove a problem. From reading the FB pages it seems that end users apparently aren't expected to tweak their ECU, this seems odd to me having done all of my own tuning and install on a previous vehicle. I'm not doing the install this time primarily because a replacement engine is about 10x what my previous car's engine would've been. That assumption means that you have to buy a CAN cable to communicate with the ECU at $300+ which stings!
My car is having some wiring done so it's not completely PnP but that wiring is for back pressure sensors and other sensors including E85. None of my stock harness is being modified for this so in theory a flash to my stock ECU for the injectors and missing MAF would be doable.
I have the advantage of a shop that's done a bunch of these, Garth at Undercover. Looking over the instructions I had I don't think I could've easily done the wiring they're doing without some sweating nor the initial tune. I'll be posting my impressions when done and hopefully learning a bunch I'll be sharing. I understand how frustrating it can be to work on something without good instructions and missing parts, I'd imagine being so far away makes it ten times worse! I've ridden in a Syveccs equipped car and aside from some CAN issues that needed some additional hardware it drove well. I'm hoping for that level of quality when my setup is done and I'm pretty curious about AEM's Infinity too as it turns out I know some of the guys who worked on it - they contacted me the day after I bought my proEFI lol. Stay tuned, I'm hoping to be able to post better experiences when mine is done and I'll certainly provide feedback!
P.S. OP, please keep us posted on the MOTEC install! I can't swing that cash but have always been curious about them...

Bummer to hear Brett. I was fortunate to have a good unit as well as many others I'm sure. Like anything there will be some struggles with these types of mods (poor quality excluded) but if you have the patience, time, resources and $$, most of the time you can have success. I agree that ProEFI support isn't the greatest, especially for the DIY guys, I mean the ProEFI 112 instructions were the worst I've ever seen for a product like this. It almost seemed like they do that on purpose, but who knows. Oh and don't get me started on that whole "plug and play" horse sh$t. In fact, I had the dealer who sold me mine tell me that the term "plug and play" was subjective and shouldn't be taken literally. However, having said that I do think if you are lucky enough to get a 100% working unit AND if you have a reputable ProEFI tuner helping with install and tune, I really think that the platform can perform as well as a few other $$$$ standalones out there.
Freddy - it did man
Here's a crappy vid of it at an auto cross event this fall.
A few weeks before that I was out HPR with the setup (John invited me out and it was awesome) The car ran great.....honestly I was expecting an issue, but nope. I thought I might have more issues at the autocross with all the on/off throttle but it ran smooth every run.
Yes I know I'm slow as sh@t on the auto cross. It was my first time ever doing this cone stuff.

Wow, this post really struck a chord with me.. I haven't really ever posted about my experience with Pro EFI but I thought I would share my 2cents. I apologize in advance for my lengthy story.
I had a Pro EFI 128 in my Supra. With the "plug in play" harness it took me about 4 hours to get everything wired in properly (soldering connections with new pins and shrink sleeved). Starting up from scratch with 2150cc FIC Injectors it was a bit of a pain to get the base map ironed out. I called Jason for some support and he basically told me that my car would not run unless I ran injectors that were 1000cc or smaller.
Right off the bat I knew that I was dealing with someone that didn't have any idea about tuning cars that make any type of power. The issue is he is the person that may have wrote the program but didn't know how it would work in the real world. In fact, Jason has to contact many of the tuners that use his product to provide information about how to use his own product.
Now this isn't the problem I see, the problem is his attitude. He gives misinformation to people when he doesn't know the answer as to save face. Not only that but he comes across as a pompous *** when you ask him questions. What apparently he doesn't realize is that this is the very "business model" that will put him out of business.
I had a few problems too with the harness, and because I was so deep in the install, I sent it back and had to pay for a new harness at my expense. I now have a friend that has a Corvette z06 with the same harness problems (shorting out wires that were not sealed properly from Pro EFI) and he too is having to buy a new harness at a small discount. Some of the worst customer service I have seen.
I had to turn to other shops for assistance with getting all the bugs out, and without them I would have never been able to get everything running properly. In my opinion it is only because of some of the great people in our car community that have kept Pro EFI in business because Jason and his forward facing "professionalism" is worthless.
With all this said, I have tuned on a decent amount of stand-alones: AEM v1/v2, F-Con Vpro and Haltech to name a few along with ProEFI. The 128 is a great product, the flex fuel, traction control, and knock sensing is some of the best I have seen IMHO.
In the end, I was able to get my Supra to run with very smooth idle at 1000rpm with 2150cc injectors, stock like drive-ability, and make 1070whp to the tire. No thanks to the help from Jason. (starting to see a pattern here?)
If you do end up purchasing a ProEFI, please make sure it is from a shop that will take care of you from start to finish. A shop that knows how to do the installation and tuning. Because if you call ProEFI directly, they are just going to call the shop for assistance and try to belittle you in the process.

I'm surprised you didn't go with MoTec since your in Australia and they're "local" to you. A good harness is key. My race shop specializes in MoTec and they build up specific harnesses for each application. My car gets the same harness they use for Cup cars and GT3s. Spec Boxsters get a different harness, all custom. Quality of work is paramount in a headache free set up. Hardly anything is plug and play in my experience unless you are doing the bare basics. Just my $0.02. Again, hope you get it all sorted. Many guys on this forum run the ProEFi and seem to be happy. I think the key is having someone that is intimately familiar with it for the proper set up. Lack of customer support however always puts a sour taste in your mouth so I can relate.
I agree, I should have gone with what can be supported locally; which for me is MoTec. That lesson has been learned. What I didn't count on was that what I was being told by ProEFI about the 112 was just lies or misrepresentation. It's marketed as Plug N Play - it's not. I was told that they had a trained dealer in Australia - that was just a lie. Initially the dealer told me that he'd be able to support it and do the tune over teamviewer, but as we started to run into problems he admitted to me that he had been trying to get training organised from ProEFI but it hadn't happened. And then the multiple quality issues that are documented in my YouTube video are just unforgivable.
Reading this thread and the one on the 997TT forum, I think with the number people posting about the problems they have had with ProEFI technical issues and lack of customer service that it's enough to make you question the risk. I note that ProEFI have dropped the price of the 112 again and it's much cheaper than the competition. I thought I was getting a bargain but it's ended up costing me much more. I don't drive a cheap *** car, I should not have gone with the cheap *** ECU option.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Clearly there are forum members out there that have ProEFIs working in their cars and they perform. I'm not saying that the ECUs don't work or can't work. It just got to a point where the ongoing quality issues (which were with the PNP harness and the software freezing and not flashing files) that the techs here where I live didn't want the headache.
So I think the message is that if you are somewhere local to a tuner that knows them you can make it work, otherwise you're rolling the dice hoping that you get one that doesn't have all the faults mine did.

I absolutely agree that this matched my experience of Jason Siebels as well. One of the other things he did in my deal also let me know pretty quickly the calibre of the person I was dealing with. Under the direction of the Australian Dealer I paid ProEFI in the US direct for my ECU. I had a written quote from the ProEFI Marketing Manager in Arizona with a price (which by the way was several hundred US dollars more that they retailed them for in the US). ProEFI sent me a PayPal invoice for the amount on the quote which I paid. One of the reasons I went with ProEFI was that I wanted to get my car going for the racing season. They told me the PNP ECU was quick and easy to get set up. More than a month after I paid for the ECU I was still waiting for them to ship it - they didn't tell me that they didn't have stock. Then when it was ready to ship Jason Siebels demanded that I pay his PayPal fees before he would ship it. He knew I wanted it to get my car going, so he knew he had me over a barrell. I sent him the quote saying WTF?, your manager confirmed the price and PayPal payment. Siebels answer was, he was wrong, he doesn't work here anymore, and I had to pay the PayPal fees on credit card before he would ship it.

Sure thing - I post about the MoTec as it's done
Thanks for that. I'm far from pro but I do OK in state level speed events and plan on doing Targa rally events around Australia.

Sometimes things sound to good to be true... Ive heard about this a while back as well. I know syvtec is a true plug n play... but for now IM on a s tock ecu and still running 9 sec. passes over and over with 155mph mph passes.. my point: stand alones are not for everyone... they get you on a $3200 intro price only to end up with thousands in labor costs later. that is why Im on a stock ecu... all you need a good open program, a EBC, and the rest depends on you..
