Windsheild Replacement - OEM now Czech??
Windsheild Replacement - OEM now Czech??
I got a chip in my windsheild recently and had it repaired by safelite. I was dissatisfied with the repair- of course you could still see a crack although it was smooth to the touch... Not good enough.
I had them quote an OEM replacement, for which I would have to come out of pocket approx $600 (aftermarket replacement would have been free since I live in FL)... I decided to shop around. A different local reputable glass shop told me they could get OEM glass at no out of pocket cost to me. Obvious choice. I sat there while they called my local dealership, Feilds Porsche (formerly Brumos), they had one in stock and we proceeded with the replacement.
I picked up my car yesterday to find that my windsheild looks awesome- except rather than "Made in Germany", it says "Made in Czech Republic". I am a little disheartened by this, but I guess that's where they're made now??? I feel like that alone keeps my car from ever placing in any kind of local concourse shows... The car only has 19K miles.
Just wanted to spread the word, as I didn't see any mention of this on the forum.
Any thoughts/reactions/similar experiences?

The one in my 05 S is also Cz, if that makes you feel better. Don't know if later years used glass not made in Germany, or if a PO had it replaced. Your local concours doesn't sound very fun. Good call getting OEM replacement.
Our '99 Boxster was made in Finland. The OE replacement motor in my '996 C2 had Bosch parts clearly labeled Made in China. We are a global economy and manufacturing of anything is not specific to any country.
BTW, German glass was most always inferior to anything made in North America by a long shot!
You will also find many parts on your 996TT come from Spain (motor case), Sweden, France, Italy, Japan, China just to name a few.

Another dad, huh? Good thing you're not here. My daughters would be chasing you around trying to beat you over the head with whatever they happened to be holding.
Indeed - I have fully crossed over to "full time bad pun/unfunny joke teller" status in my house.
It happens. Me too.
I was talking about this thread at dinner tonight. Everyone else at the table was booing and hissing while I was cackling manically.

BTW, everyone else in my family is female. Even the dog. Might have something to do with it...
