Power Steering Fail? Looking for Second Opinion

Hi folks,

I'm pretty sure I'm getting close to having built a brand new 996 Turbo at this point... After my clutch accumulator failed I did the GT2 slave upgrade but when getting ready for a track weekend I checked my fluids and discovered that the mechanic hadn't put power steering fluid back in the pump... One of the best Porsche specific mechanics in Ontario too. Just my luck.

Anyway while at the track weekend I noticed that there was a loud squealing / whistling sound from the engine bay. Thought at first it was a fan working over drive but of course it was there the next day so no dice.

I did some hunting / listening and it seems like it would either be the belt or the power steering pump and based on everything my guess is the pump. But before I spend $700 I was hoping someone could help confirm or deny.

Thoughts?

Did they simply plug the port on the PSU when they removed the line or go inside the pump? If they simply plugged it that might explain the noise as the pump is deadheaded trying to push fluid out that port...

^This. It just sounds like too much of a coincidence.

Pictorial on how to remove the coupler in the .docs here:

Many shops forget to remove the coupler when doing the GT2 conversion which will make it noisy and destroy it in the long run. 99% this is your problem... Take it back and give em hell...

I haven't done this conversion yet (on the list next the trans is pulled!) but when I heard about this one step but only in about half the documents I seemed to find on doing it I wondered what might happen f it was skipped and that port tried to deadhead. If the pump is bad buy a GT2 pump as a replacement to skip the hassle! Be careful doing the mod too, I've heard of the pump getting cracked somehow and leaking.

The pump strains to pump fluid into an area with no outlet for the pressure. Hence the noise. It's not good long term. I would just buy the Tip/GT2 pump without the coupler if you don't want to disassembly the TT one.

Thanks for the offer Krazy, with the current exchange rate and shipping costs to Canada I'm basically in new pump territory price wise.

Thanks for all the input guys, sounds like we're all in agreement on the diagnosis. I'm going to talk to the mechanic and see if he remembers pulling the coupler, if not looks like I'll be ordering yet another part lol

It looks like the GT2 unit is shared with the TT. Not sure how that works with the drive coupler... seems weird, I'll have to investigate the part numbers a bit more.

Thanks for the input!

The GT2 pump is the same as the TT tiptronic pump.
