SOS Ok guys here we go again with the "poppin outta 2nd gear" issue

DJ, Colin, Robyn and everybody else affected. Please help me. I did a research on the popping out of 2nd gear issues and read through all the posts. My car did it a few times in october (05) and didnt do it again until recently (Dec). Doesnt happen all the time and I cant reproduce on demand. As far as I recall, it happens mostly when I decel in 2nd gear, although very seldom. Syncrolls or tranny???? Worst case scenario if the tranny has to be rebuilt or changed, whats the cost in your experience (I've read that it ranges between 2k to 5k usd)? By the way, Im out of warranty. Has anyone else gotten it fixed on Porsches dime out of warranty? (Colin, how did you go about with it?) Does anyone have a positive experience with the Auto gallery (Socal) on repairing this issue? That is where I service my 996 TT. Any further info on this would be much appreciated since Im trying to sell the car and dont want the next guy to get a car with this problem.

It could be something as simple as re-adjusting the cable lengths on the shifter. However, it might be something more in depth such as a bent shift fork, damaged rail, or synchros.

synch rolls... my tranny was replaced with the same symptoms. are u using a B&M shifter? if so- thats the problem- either it was not properly adjusted and or the porsche techs swear its not the same as the Porsche SSK... and it doesnt slow down the synch rolls fast enough. just my thoughts.

Hey markski,
My car is bone stock, no aftermarket parts. What did it cost you or were you lucky enough to have the warranty take care of it?

Same thing happened to me. I was told that the synco forks were bent and this is caused by rushing the 1st to 2nd shift. I disputed that since I NEVER slam shift the car. I even hate to admit that I've never clutch dumped the car from a standing start. Even at the track I slow shift the car.

IMHO this tranny is CRAP. There is no way it should have had to be replaced with 11K miles on it. Hell, even when they had it out the tech commented on how good a shape my clutch plates were although I sprung to have them replaced since it's so cheap.

Now I have less than 2K miles on the new tranny (under warranty) and am experiencing 2nd to 3rd crunching at the track when under high lateral loads accelarating hard out of a corners while going up hill. WTF?!!!

It's exactly this type of thing that makes me not want to keep this car past it's warranty period.

How many miles do you have on your car? How far out of warranty is it? Have you owned it since new? Did you buy it from that dealer? All of these things will factor into whether they'll give you a courtesy repair or a price break.

I had the transmission replaced under warranty about a year ago. New transmission has been flawless. I think Porsche has pretty much conceded that there was a defect in some transmissions which led to the problem; if you scream loud enough you may get it replaced for free even though the car is out of warranty.

Bart, I got 17 K on it and its about 8 months out of warranty. I bought the car used. My service rep over at the auto gallery will look into it to see if Porsche will help out. Although he said that a deciding factor is whether you are the original owner or not. So we'll see if Porsche owns up to it. My guess is that they wont but one could always hope that Porsche backs up their product.

My first p car was a 99 c2 tip. I just like the manual clutch and shift better than the tip. As long as I dont have to fork out cash for something thats a design fault by Porsche or get a reocurring problem Ill be happy with my manual.

Peter,
let me know how AG goes. warranty goes with the car, not owner. although original might have ''better'' relationship with dealer, that's about it. since the car is on paper out of warranty, u certainly need some hook up to get it done. maybe Brian up north can help.

If you know who the original owner is or where the car was serviced, maybe and likely this happened before when the car was under warranty. If that's the case then based on the past history of a complaint, they should cover it. Mine used to do it but not in 2 years but I'm sure to log it as a complaint before warranty is out for reason mentioned above. I even logged a complaint with the NHTSA when it happened to look into recall/defects. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Ok so Rex my usual rep is on vacation but the other guy Don helped me out with my TT. I asked if he would ask Porsche to help me out on this one. He said hed contact Porsche and he has. Were now waiting for them to get back to us. Don did say that a tranny replacement might cost 20 to 30 K for a TT. Could this be right? Like mentioned above Im out of warranty but the car only has 17K on it. Im thinking that a car in the TT price range shouldnt have a tranny issue after 17K. And since it seems that so many others have had this problem, shouldnt this automatically be something that Porsche should take care of? Im really curious to see if Porsche will take care of this. Id like to think that Porsche cares enough about their customers to help out, although (in all honesty) I didnt buy the car new.
But like Arling mentioned, the warranty comes with the car and not the driver. I wonder if the previous 2 owners of the car are here at 6 speed. Maybe they had the same problem while the car was still under warranty. The car is polar on black with vin# wpoab29901s686834. If someone knows about my car perhaps they could pm me or post info in this thread.
