997.2 intercoolers are light, relatively efficient, and recover very quickly (cool down). For road race (circuit) or hard street driving they are probably the best thing you can do for your 996/997.1 unless you spend €8-10000.
For acceleration runs only, large heavy intercoolers (such as those from Markski) keep the intake charge cool longer. But they take longer to recover as well.

If you choose to go with the 997 intercoolers be sure they are from the 997.2 turbo or the 997 gt2 RS... they are different than the 997.1 turbo/gt2 non-RS. I have these coolers on my car and am very pleased with them.
Relatively easy install?
You have to modify the intercooler ducting. Not hard but time consuming. There's a DIY in the thread about 997.2 intercoolers linked above.
Yeah not bad at all. Most time consuming part is modifying the ducts as mentioned, but the modifications are not that difficult, it was more of a measure repeatedly before cutting my ducts so I don't mess things up paranoia that made it take long.
I had the intercoolers sitting in my garage and was doing a spark plug change and spur of the moment, perhaps inspired by the beer I had drank during the plug change, that I decided to do it and it didn't add much time. Don't even have to lift the car off the ground. Changing the plugs was the more difficult part. Remove old IC cage and ducts, disassemble cage and cut ducts, re-assemble with new IC and re-install.
