3rd gear problem -- Need some advice please ...

I have a 2003 X50 manual. After driving on the track all day last week (Laguna Seca), the car started having problems going into 3rd gear. I could still get it into 3rd, but it would grind unless I shifted slowly.

I took it to the dealer for debug/repair. Dealer is claiming the REV 2 count is at 22 indicating the car has been ‘abused’. He says the REV 2 count increases when the car is pushed excessively beyond the red line, for example a mis-shift or premature downshift.

I am the second owner. The car was ‘Porsche Certified’. I cannot ever remember downshifting so poorly that the abuse counter would have ticked at any track event. And I certainly don’t ‘drive it like I stole it”. This is my daily driver.

(1) Is the dealer right…under what conditions the REV 2 count get increased? Does it have to do with the boost level?

(2) Does the EVO STAGE 1 upgrade affect when this REV 2 count is increased?

(3) The dealer is still unsure what the exact problem is and the transmission is still in the process of being examined. Anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong and how it could have happened?

The car has had 6-8 track days at Laguna Seca, Buttonwillow and Willow Springs. These events are DE’s and I am not an aggressive driver.

Mike,

Check out the thread "SOS car popping out of 2nd gear". If you did not abuse your tranny you should have no warranty issue. Porsche has a track record of denying claims from second owners, however since your car was Porsche Certified they don't have a very good case. Be nice but be firm, they should warranty your transmission, as they have had other failures as a search of this board and rennlist will reflect.

Get the Porsche Factory Regional rep involved ASAP. He will make the decision, but the dealer can help or hurt your case with him. So work to get the dealer working for you.

Good luck.
