Does anyone know how to disassemble the base of the leather shift boot where it attaches to the plastic base that snaps into the console, specifically how to remove the silver horse shoe around the base of the shifter? It appears to be simply glued on the leather but I wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything before messing with it. I just want to make sure I don't overlook any tabs before trying to pull the horseshoe off. My goal is to detach the leather from the plastic base (it's glued to that), pull it further down over the plastic base (maybe 1" or so), re-glue it to the base, and trim off the excess prior to refitting the horseshoe. My goal is to reduce some of the bunching of the boot at the base as there is simply too much material there. You have to pull a buch of the boot under the shifter base to reduce this. This is on a 997 shifter which has an OEM 996 base. Thanks

There are either 4 or 6 pegs (sorry cant remember exactly) on the underside of the silver piece that insert/snap into small holes in the perimeter of the boot. It shouldn't take much force to pull it off.. If you haven't gotten it figured out by this evening, I have it pulled off on my car and it is sitting on my work bench and can double check how many pegs and the positioning around the boot.
Yes it's stretched around the ring over the pegs. If I recall it also may be glued. You can remove it rather easily. Pull the front of the boot off those pegs and work the rest off around the perimeter.

Perfect. Knowing the exact location of the pegs would be helpful. If you could snap a picture of it would be great. Thank you!
wouldnt it be easier to simply pull the excess leather up to the **** and trim it from the top/ then use a tie wrap underneath to secure it to the ****

The leather boot fits into the OEM locking ring which is at the base of the 997GT3 shift ****. Since the boot flares out, if you cut any amount off the top you will end up with too much material and will no longer be able to fit it into the locking ring . Yes, you could secure it with a zip tie but it will not have the nice smooth transition as on the factory ****. You end up with a lump there created by the hidden zip tie. Not a big deal but I prefer the clean OEM transition. I may actually not need to mess with it after all as the **** will sit higher than I originally estimated thus reducing the amount of leather boot at the base. All the parts are OEM so it should not be an issue.

I had the same issue as the rennlist thread where the silver surround paint was bubbling/chipping. I ended up stretching the leather over the silver surround and wrapping it under to hid the plastic surround piece entirely. It got rid of some of the excess material and it works good in my interior because my car had the carbon trim package with very little silver trim. The only silver pieces in my interior are the door handles and the handbrake button. Here is a quick picture. Sorry for the bad lighting and my dirty interior:
i used a small tiewrap at the front of the ball. cant see it from the inside of the car as it points at the dash. its an option to keep the bottom looking right
Actually, I did a write up on how to R&R the leather boot for a shop that built a custom one for me, it included pics! My Photobucket account has the pictures, be gentle as the silver can easily bubble if that plastic bends! http://s272.photobucket.com/user/blk...?sort=3&page=1
Zealous made the boot and did a damn good job of it using mine as a pattern! Lots of custom options too
When I converted my entire shift system to 997.2 GT3 the OEM shift **** was, as you know, needed in order to make the shifting feel just right. The OEM 997 **** has the proper mass.
I used an replacement shift boot base part# 99655265501 and an aftermarket alcantara shift boot with silver stitching from ebay.
