Thinking about my first Porsche purchase...
Thinking about my first Porsche purchase...
And, as with other things in my life, I tend to jump in at the deepest end of the pool (or should I say ... wallet
)
Anyhow, I always told myself that my first P-car would be a 993TTS but I'm desiring something a bit more refined nowadays. So, I'm looking at an RTurbo or another heavily modified 996TT.
Could you guys tell me whether the extra $ that one pays for a Ruf manufactured car is worth it? I know, it's a subjective question, but there are a lot of beautifully modded 996TT out there and very few RTurbos - does rarity alone justify the price? Or is there a performance/build quality/dependability difference between a Ruf car and a GIAC/EVO/Sportec/etc. car?
Thanks for any assistance guys, I'm a newbie on this board but would greatly appreciate any input you've got.

Ruf cars are top-notch quality that should maintain their value better than any other stock or modded Porsche. If you are shelling out all the dough for initial work and don't mind spending more then it is a good choice. If you are buying a car that's been done then you will save alot of $ as the modded cars may be worth about half their build costs in some cases. No question the best bang for the buck is used, modded TT but you need to be careful as to the history and if everything is well sorted or not. There are alot of nice TT's right now and lucky 2nd or 3rd owners coming on board for (relatively) low cost. If you are lucky enough to live near complete tuners then it would be hard to not put their product near the top of the list. Members here are usually glad to help so reach out if you find something interesting.
May I ask what other cars you've owned?
If your first Porsche is your first sports cars, it might be better to gradually get up to an RTurbo. Maybe start with a 996tt for while, do some mods, than get an RT12

Anyway there are so many great deals that will be going around for heavily modded, relatively low mileage and immculate turbo's going around. For instance, Fred's old GT700, techart 2002 is being sold on ebay by the guy he sold it too, 75k no reserve

my only words of advice - make sure you put aside $10-15k if you intend to purcahse a modded car.
i bought one a few months ago and i'm still paying to get the car straightened out - plugs, coils, ecu, window switch, tires, clutch, and now possibly coilovers.

I've got several 500hp mid 11 sec. cars so I'm familiar with that level of power...but not necessarily 700-800hp. Is it worth it or will I be satisfied (at least for awhile
) with the 550?

Many 02 and 03 cars are just coming off lease and are great deals. There are numerous choices under 20K miles. Many are still covered under the factory warranty. If you don't plan on putting a ridiculous abmount of miles, you can buy an aftermarket EZCARE (backed by Ford) bumper to bumper warranty that wil cover you for 11 years and a total of 70,000 miles (from the time the car was first registered) with $100 deductible for under $3,000.
I am very close to picking one up. It's cheap insurance even for a modded car, and will be good selling point down the road.
