996 Turbo Gearbox/differential leak?

Seal #11 ? But it can come from higher up, hard to see on the picture.....It is not the slave because it is located on the other side.... Looks like it is coming from higher up on the second picture but difficult to see....

Many thanks! Yes, I couldn’t get a full view of above the axle to see if it was leaking from above. There was some fluid on the Gearbox casing above the axle, as shown in the second pic. Unsure if this is leaking down or residue from the axle seal leaking.
I will put the car in to the specialist I use but I always like to speak to them with some knowledge so they don’t try and pull a fast one.

Could also be the selector seal. Mine was overfilled and leaked pretty good from that area, especially after a spirited drive. Changed the fluid to the correct level and hasn't leaked since.

....and it’s not the axle seal after all. Turns out it’s the dreaded gear selector seal. Gearbox has to come out. Not great news. Shall start a new thread!

Before you go through the expense check the fluid level. It should be a few mm below the fill hole, if overfilled it is more prone to leak at the selector seal. You could also try taking off the shift weights which will relieve some of the stress on the seal for a bit.

Thanks. Have the same thread running in another forum and I added this.
The mechanic had the car up on a lift and showed me some play in the gear selector mechanism. There was a drip of oil there, which I questioned if it was from the axle seal or slave cylinder. He stated it couldn’t be the slave as this will leak down the other side of the box. This is not always the case though, as seen in jpflip’s image above. He was adamant it was from the selector seal. Looking back at this my first image does suggest it could be from the selector seal. However, the oil leak is spread all across the gearbox around the axle, as seen in first pic, so im still wondering if it’s leaking from above in the location of the slave cylinder. Now confused as I don’t want to go through the expense of a gearbox removal as second gear is only slightly weak and just needs warming up.

Wash gearbox. Drive car. Look for leak.
IMO I wouldn't pull the gearbox for that leak. It does not look very bad at all. Just keep an eye on fluid level. Then, when you need a clutch do it all at once - unless you need a clutch now, of course!

You should be able to tell if its gear oil or pretension based on the smell. My selector seal leaked a few drops after parking after driving real hard and the fluid was less viscous and heated up. If its the selector seal you will see a drop on the weights and cables an hour or two after parking. You will also see it on the ground right under the selector or shift weight. I would not go through the expense of replacing this seal if mine was leaking. It's probably a matter of ounces lost per year. I would just top it off when doing an oil change. But then again I'm not your typical Porsche baller

I think I may be in the same boat... I just developed the exact same symtopms. I'm able to reach over the trans and feel the slave - doesn't feel wet or slick...
I suspected axle seal and Google found your thread for me...

Been busy this month but finally got around to verifying my issue as a slave leak. Fluid coming out from under the rubber boot. Flows down on driver's side for whatever reason. Gonna install new one with engine and trans in situ.
Still curious about OPs issue...

Of course, next step is to check the level, but my question is how could they have overfilled the gearbox oil in the first place? Whenever I’ve changed gearbox oil on other cars, I’ve removed a nut and filled until oil just starts to meet the bottom edge that I’ve filled my the oil through. Don’t see how they could get too much in!?
