I consider a torque monster if within 5% of HP. I'm sure 997 Turbo will do it as most TT and SC cars reach that number. It's even better if the peak is matched or torque peak is lower and I think that's what all that variable turbine business is about. I'll tell you what though, I don't think you're a "brain-surgeon" for trying that new tech first. Personally, I'm always afraid of new engines, transmissions, turbos, etc. b/c they never have all the bugs worked out before release. I hope for the best for Porsche and early-adapters like you, but experience tells me the odds are against it.

torque is what u feel. horsepower is for the ego. if u consider ur M5 is a torque monster then drive any AMG car with the 55 sc motor for the same price range. if u can find a 65 even better. i'm not talking about handling so let's leave the ''driving MB is like having sex with a thick condom'' comment. torque is addicting, hard to give up! tell me about it...

Arling you wanted my review so here you go short and sweet ...

If you want a boring, fast luxury sedan keep the AMG.

If you want an incredibly fun, fast luxury sedan trade it for an M5 like I did.

The M5 is an absolute BLAST to drive compared to the AMG. The fact that the AMG is a little faster does not even come close to offsetting this IMO.

In my case, you couldn't pay me to trade back.

Oh, and if you want the M5 to be a little quicker just slap on a 100 shot of NOS and it will do 11.5. If this car had a better 60 ft time (that low end torque thing) it would be faster than that LOL

Well I'm hoping that the 997TT is continued evolution, so not the same as buying a "new engine".

Also my deposit is for a 997TT S Cab with DSG/ or whatever it is going to be called. I'm assuming that my car is 12-18 mos away. Any bugs will hopefully be worked out by then.

thanks man. looks like i'll get it. just 3 weeks less away & i'm dying for a new key, not that i love it much, i just need that new car smell again... worse than drug!

have u ever bothered by the laggy SMG III? i don't hate the car, the look, but the tranny is what bothers me the most. i'll have time to decide. AMG is not leaving yet. in fact i really like it surprisingly, really. i know it might be boring but it just fits my need perfect. it's fun for everyday & for weekend excitement i grab a different key.

There are two issues that people talk about in regards to the SMG - speed and smoothness. The speed of the shifts are almost entirely dependent on throttle position and driving mode - with your foot down in S6 the shifts are so fast and hard it's like getting shot out of a cannon. As far as smoothness, once you learn how to do the slight lift during gear changes it's as smooth as any other automatic. It's so slight that a good way to imagine it is not to noticeably move your shoe but just slightly lifting your foot inside your shoe. After while you don't even think about it, you just do it. People who complain just haven't learned how to do it properly ...

I agree that 997 TT engine wouldn't be as scary as V10 BMW engine and the variable turbo thing should shake out after 6+ months. The twin clutch manumatics are supposed to be "the" answer and I'll refrain any opinion until I drive one. Good luck with it either way.

gilzen is infamous around these parts
Actually I think torque is fun. My TT is definitely faster than my E55 but the E55 is just an effortless jump and smile- that is torque. Not to put down the M5, which is a great car, but while the M5 is getting into its "fun zone" that boring E55 just might "slip" by.

For me, low torque is lot more important then high rev hp in my daily drive.

Obviously that was my opinion, but I had one for about 6 months I'm pretty sure if you found 10 people who've owned both an AMG and the new M5 9 out of those 10 would say the AMG is "boring" compared to the M5. If you want a "boring" car to cruise around in, the AMG is great. But as far as sports sedans are concerned, yes it's pretty "boring" compared to something like the new M5.
