Thoughts on mileage........
Thoughts on mileage........
Everytime people talk about buying/selling a 996tt, everyone talks about the mileage. The people that have one say "get out and drive it". This is the first car that I have owned that I am watching every mile on. I guess since it is my first "exotic" and mileage is so important for resale. I got my Ruf in November with 8400 mile on it. It now has 9800 miles on it and I have seen on here that 12,000 is the magic number as far as value goes.
My commute to work is about 30 miles each way so I am putting close to 100 miles on it every time I take it out. Of course since I am watching the miles, they seem like they are adding up that much more. I do plan on keeping it for awhile and driving it a few times a week with the exception of winter and bad weather.
Does anyone else think about it or what?
I guess I am just being a ***** about it and should enjoy the damn thing.................

It's understandable and entirely based on the individual. Personally, I don't care about it. I bought the car to enjoy it and I've always assumed that it would depreciate. It's a luxury to have a fine vehicle and it should be treated as such, IMO.
So, I say drive it as much and as often as you can. What good is the car if it's always sitting in the garage?
The only caveat to that is bad weather, particularly snow, etc.

Nothing is free. You just have to decide what
you want to do: drive a RUF or save money.
Nothing bad implied, but a RUF is only special in
two ways:
1 - Name/image/pride etc.
2 - Massive performance and good reliability/support
To the extent that you bought for reason 1, this
can lessen over time. It's psychological, so the
high can wear off. At that point you just have a
car, and you start to rethink the money.
2 - This is mostly only valuable if/when you really
drive hard. If you do this a lot, maybe at track events,
you have a durable reason for your purchase. If you
only get to red-line once a month or less and never
get to .9 lateral Gs, you have to ask yourself if it's
worth it.

drive it . . . park it . . . drive it . . . park it . . the debate goes on.
Suppose you park it - Why not go visit one at the dealer? Those are always brand new and retain their value. You can drive them whenever you want - to a point.

I suupose it's sort of like women....
You always want to get one with low miles on it. It's no fun unless you put some miles on it/her yourself. The more, the better.
Also, continuing with the same comparison, I would rather buy a car that has miles over a low mile car that's been abused. Sort of like marrying a well maintained 40 year-old over a 22 year-old with issues and poor maintenance.

I am driving and enjoying it no question about it. I am keeping it for awhile but just hate to see the miles accumulating so quickly. Oh well, what are you gonna do? I just wanted some opinions and I certainly got them!! The car is going to be going away for a little while anyway with this blizzard coming to NY...............
'02 33,000 miles. Wish I had time to put on more miles. Friend of mine has an '01 996 that has not yet turned 5,000 miles. WTF is that about? He spends most of his driving time getting used the clutch all over again.
