Stereo won't turn off and car won't lock

I have a 2001 996 Turbo, six speed. I have a constant, non-intermittent, issue in which once I remove the key and open the door the radio will not turn off. I can manually turn it off but I think there is something still active in the system. I also cannot lock the car either with the fob or the key. This makes it challenging to take the car anywhere. It seems as if the car doesn't recognize that the key has been turned to off and removed from the ignition.
I tried disconnecting the battery and that did not change anything. I have been leaving the car on a trickle charger to avoid the battery going dead.

Any thoughts as to what is going on?

Update - tried a little lubricant on the key and put it in and out a couple of times. Turned it a few times as well. Suddenly you could hear things come back into place when the key was removed. Works like a charm now.
