New front bearings

it was so loud in the car you could barely have a conversation. The drivers side bearing was in ok shape but I did that too. One a night. Even though you could not feel any movemennt in either wheel by hand the tracking and total feel of the car were astounding. 2001 996 turbo with 74000 miles. Took 3 hours for the first and 2 hours for the second. Heating to the specification allows the bearing to be slipped right in. I will do the rears next.

Hi... seems so quick to do but never easy.

Curious what bearing Brand did you use ?
Did you remove the complete assembly and use a press.?
How did you heat to 100 ?

Do these tend to fail slowly so that I'm not surprised suddenly on the side of the road?

Mine went at 23,000 miles, I did all 4 of them, only 1 "real bad' but all 4 showed signs of wear. It's just one of those things that go from time to time.

You will hear the noise slowly increase over time. It's definitely not a panic thing to have to fix.

I was convinced that my Yokohama AD08Rs were howling loud, but could def. hear a distinct growl from the pass. side front. I had my local indy shop confirm, wheel bearing was shot at 56K miles. I had them replace both fronts, apparently my Yoks now aren't as loud as I thought...much, much quieter.

Interestingly enough, the noise did increase slowly over time, but the tires also get louder over time, so it was sort of masking it!

wheel bearings def get louder over time. Interesting about the tires, as my Falken rt-615k HOWL as the fronts wear and it's very, very pronounced at speed on the highway. Goes away when I change my wheels. I thought mine were shot, I don't recall them ever being done in 70k. Good tires, when they wear, can get pretty irritating.

No bearing troubles with my Turbo in 161K miles, but my Boxster developed a noisy bearing around 90K miles.

Didn't know it at first but after I got a new set of tires installed there was a noise. Shop owner diagnosed wheel bearing but wasn't sure which one. Had me test drive the car. I came back and said it sounded like the right rear. The owner said that was his diagnosis as well.

Before the test drive I had said to replace both bearings but he talked me out of this and I took the test drive.

Anyhow, he placed the bad bearing and no more bearing problems even after 317K miles.

While a wheel bearing generally goes from bad to worse rather slowly I would not try to nurse the bad bearing. If you suspect a noisy bearing get the car in and get this taken care of ASAP.

This is what it sounded like. I used 2 propane torches to heat the housing.
