I bought a couple of used axles from a dismantler salvage yard, one good, the other damaged. I got them cheap, disassembled them to get what I needed, saved my originals to go back to AWD when and if I ever decide to sell the car.

OK51MON is infamous around these parts
Do you actually need these axles for RWD conversion?

I thought you just pull out the front driveshaft and viscous coupling and you're done?

What am I missing?

Perhaps its different for a tiptronic

RWD just means disconnecting the drive shaft to the front differential. A proper RWD conversion removes the front differential and axles and removes aprox 100 Lb?

To elaborate on this. The front axles have ABS sensor rings on the outer axle stub that tell the ABS sensor how fast the wheel is spinning or if it stops, etc. If you just remove the axles, you'll throw and ABS light and lose ABS function and probably PSM function too. Re-installing the stub sans the bar, and inner CV or buying fabbed axle stubs allow you remove most of the axles and the front diff/viscous coupling for full weight and parasitic drag benefit of RWD conversion.
