2nd Gear Synchro weak - worth repairing?
2nd Gear Synchro weak - worth repairing?
Hi guys,
I have been living with a weak second gear synchro on my 2002 for a few years now. When changing into second at low revs when cold it’s OK but anything over approx 2000-2500rpm I get a grind. It still happens after say 10-15mins driving, when the engine oil is warmed up - assume gear oil warms slower. After approx 20 mins driving it’s OK.
I can drive around it, but have been thinking of getting it repaired of late. This is because I may sell the car and think this issue will put off many buyers. However, I’ve been reading other threads saying a second gear grind isn’t uncommon and other owners with similar issues have just lived with it until more major work needs doing.
I’ll be having the clutch slave cylinder done and axle shaft seal done regardless, so there is some economies of scale to getting it all done. I don’t get second gear pop out.
I’ve also read that cars built after ‘03 seem to have resolved the issue. So, I’d assume any new synchros going in would be the updated parts so as to avoid them failing again in the future!?
Any advice appreciated!

it isn't the "parts" that were upgraded by MY "03. it was the shim tolerances in the g50 box that were ammended and where gear #4 ultimately ends up in the gear stack placement that made for a more certain "engagement" for 1&2.
its about $4k ( minimum ) to open the box and r&r the 1/2 synchros ( always done in concert ) and replace bearings as/if needed.
you'd be an awful swell seller to do that in advance of any potential future sale. if the car was to be kept? it's a "must do".

you'll be glad you did. i've had my g50 opened 3x on two different cars. one under a CPO warranty and one on "my dime". the trick is finding someone that doesnt bend you over on labor etc.
homework is required. good luck.
