Popping out of second gear

I have this strange issue where the gear lever pops out of gear when I release the clutch. It only happens a few times when the car is cold but goes away after a few minutes.
I'm suspecting the transmission fluid needs changing, any thoughts?

What fluid would you recommend?
Thank you

I would check out gbox (gboxweb.com) and their upgraded 2nd gear detent. It's only around $150, easy to install and fixes a good deal of people's issues with second gear grind and pop-out. The swap took me about 15 minutes to do and I haven't had any issues since.

Good luck

Mine does it when it's freezing outside too. I don't think the car is actually popping OUT of gear, I think it's more of an "It wasn't all the way into gear in the first place" issue. I've had other vehicles that didn't want to smoothly change gears when it was freezing outside too. Not unique to the 996.

The real problem arises when you are already in second gear with your foot off the clutch driving, and the car pops out of gear randomly. Then you have big problems.

The Gbox detent is supposed to be great, but wow, $149! When if was first introduced it was $69. I guess everyone is entitled to make a profit but that is over double the old price.

Here is a DIY for a turbo. I don't know if the turbo is the same as the NA but thought it might help if it is similar.

Installing a 997 short shift, would this solve the problem?

Sorry Mike, but installing a shirt shift kit WILL NOT fix this problem. The case of the popping out symptom is internal gearbox. the tolerences for second gear are super tight and G-box has created a detent to replace the factory piece to increase this. A shifter only changes the "feel" of your movement from one gear to the next. its all about leverage and linkage.

Despite my specific attempt to trigger 2nd gear pop out during test drive in February before purchasing my 2001 996TT, I experienced it for the first time last night decelerating during a boost test run. Bummed. It's been a few years since anyone posted on this thread. I am curious if the GBox detent is still the recommended inexpensive fix.

Run, don't walk, to get the Gbox Kit.

I had a shop try to tell me I needed a new transmission, and that they had 20+ years experience working on Porsches blah blah blah. Turned out all I needed was the Gbox Kit, 150$ and good to go. I know he raised the price from 69$-150$ but they saved so much money in maintenance and headaches its well worth it.

I've put 10,000 Miles on my gbox kit and have not popped out of gear even once.

You can read more about this issue "2nd gear detent" is what to Google.

New to forum

Hi, I'm new to the site. Is gboxweb.com the only company that makes the part?

Thanks
