Brake question

What's up with this. New rotors got a little surface rust. Next time out it came off, but looks like the pads don't contact as much as I'd expect. Any opinions on this? Click image for larger version

New pads too?

May take some time to bed them in. They should contact 100% and you should have a clean sharp line when that happens.

I have street and track pads, none are new. Both are at almost full thickness since I barely need the brakes on the street and the track pads are almost new...

I put new pads on used 350 rotors and it took 1K plus miles before the contact was all the way across. This was on my 6 pot Brembo gt BBK.

Happened to me in my old vette when i swapped rotors and kept pads. Went away after pads wore down. How did you even get that much rust?

I had to grab some gas after they salted the roads back in November. I washed the car, but it still caused some surface rust...

Ah okay, well just drive it or you can sand your pads down.

You can speed it up by laying a piece of glass on your workbench and tape a sheet of 100-200 grit sandpaper face up on it. Take your pads face down on the sandpaper and rub them around in a figure 8 pattern with moderate preassure. The glass is to assure a completely flat surface. Then reinstall.

motogman is infamous around these parts
Wow - that looks like more than a little surface rust... but hard to tell. Could also consider having the rotors resurfaced as well as other pad suggestions.

I had the front slotted rotors on my Aston Martin turned by a local machine shop. They can't use the normal tools due to slots, so used some type of grinding stone. I didn't actually see them do the work.

Had them measure and record the final thickness for each rotor to ensure they were well over minimum specs.

Turned out well. Did leave a cross hatch pattern that resulted in slight wirring noise for a couple thousand miles until it got worn down.
