MAF Cleaner

Hey guys I just got my new issue of Racer magazine and found this add on page 35

http://www.crcindustries.com/files/M...heet%20Web.pdf

I don't have any personal experience with it. Just thought I would share the link.

The CRC product is the one everyone has been using. Works fine.

That is the same cleaning product that I included in my "MAF cleaning DIY" write-up. I'd link you to the post if the search function worked.

will this really ad hp just by cleaning it? I just had a computer check and my MAF is fine. Is it worth cleaning it for this benefit? Or better dont fix something thats not broke?

Think of it like replacing your diverter valves. It doesn't "add" horsepower so much as it brings you back to the "stock" horsepower level (if you are still stock).

If your MAF is working fine, don't bother it. The only reason that you should clean it is when the MAF becomes dirty/contaminated.

If a maf is dirty you will loose power. Cleaning it will regain that power. It can not "add" in the sense a turbo can.

DVs, do not add anything. Again, same deal. If they are leaking you are loosing pressure. Replace them and that loss is regained.

Thanks alot! about 2 weeks ago, I went in to check why I get ABS/PSM failure lights. They thought it may be the MAF. Apparantly, it was the angle sensor tripping from my 19" wheels. The MAF didnt show any problems. But just to clarify, would it be worth cleaning my 2001 996TT MAF anyways since its already 5 years old? Will I notice a smoother ride? Also, do you need to dissconnect the battery before doing this?

If you truly want to clean it, you will need to set aside about 1 minute to remove the piece, 30 minutes to let it dry after you spray it down, and 1 minute to put it back in.

Tools needed:

* T-20 torx socket/driver - "Tamper Proof" style with the hole in the middle - I found mine at Ace Hardware I think.
* A circuit/electronic cleaner that leaves no residue and is safe for plastic - it can be a spray or liquid solution. If you get the spray, make sure that it has the "spray tube" so that you can get to those hard to reach places.

I used this from Ace Hardware:

Step 1:

Locate and remove the two screws that hold the MAF onto the intake.

*** In the picture below, you can see the plug on top of the MAF (circled). On the right side of the plug, you can make out a tab that needs to be depressed in order to release the plug's connection from the top of the MAF. Push that and then lightly pull up.

Picture of the MAF's location with screws:

Step 2:

Remove the MAF and spray with cleaner and/or soak the MAF in a solution for 20-30 minutes. I sprayed mine 3 or 4 times over 10 minutes or so.

You will want to spray as much of the MAF, especially the exposed metal inside the unit (refer to the markings in the below picture), as you can. Let it sit for ~30 minutes to AIR DRY completely and then re-install the MAF.

Step 3:

Start the car and have fun.
