I bought my car a little over 10 years ago and I have replaced many worn parts over the years. There has always been some movement in the shifter when I take my foot off the gas. I figured it was "normal". I quickly changed the nylon bushings in the shifter for aluminium to remove some of the "play".
This site highlighted motor and trans mounts as something that should be done to remove the "slop" in the shifting. About 5 years ago, I replaced the transmission mount with a new 997 mount and thought: "Eh, not much difference" so I wasn't in a hurry to fork out another $400 on motor mounts. A few weeks ago, I thought it was time to give this a shot so I ordered some nice new Rennline semi-solid mounts.
These are configurable to let you decide how stiff you want it. My wife wines all the time about the "noise" (music) one is forced to experience while a passenger in my car, so I went with the "street" version (yellow) bushings to keep any transfer from the engine to the cabin to a minimum. They are extremely well designed and finished - it's a shame they are faily hidden when installed. They are quite a bit smaller than the OEM version I replaced.
I installed the new ones today. Install is really easy - 30 minutes or so with a coffee break between sides.
Needless to say, after the trans mount upgrade, I wasn't expecting to feel much of a difference - but WOW! There is absolutely no movement of the shifter when radical changes in torque are applied. Nothing, nada, nilch - not a fraction of a millimetre of movement at all. I am so amazed because I have been driving with the "slop" for 10 years, so this is a major event for me - I thought I had made all the best bang-for-buck upgrades available (and then some). There is a little more sound transfer from the rear but, to me, it sounds like "performance". Probably not perceptible with the radio on.
I just thought it would be helpful to publish this experience for everyone reading these posts who may not appreciate the magnitude of the difference this upgrade can make. Looking back; this should have been one of the first mods I made. I bought the car with 70 K km on the clock, but apparently, it was already time to replace the mounts and I didn't get it.
Humm... Well, they came with 3 sets of bushings, so I'll be good for a while - I'll let you know how they last. I'm not that into track days anymore, so for street I should be OK. I would hope I could buy new bushings if they did wear out. It's so quick to take them out, It wouldn't be much worse than an oil change.
I have the Torque solutions mounts and the biggest thing I noticed was that the rear end stays much more planted in corners. It seemed to wander a bit before I installed them. Engine mounts are definitely a "must" upgrade.
i remember well the first spirited drive after the install of the TS semi solids, along with a new 997 t-mount - the wonderful added yet connected drivetrain NVH that was transmitted into the cabin - and the taut handling that eliminated any/all lateral slop through cornering.
I think this upgrade kit with actual Porsche RS parts is the best motor mount upgrade and has stood the test of time. The only thing it lacks is flashy appearance.
