I recently sold my 2002 996 Turbo, which I ordered in 2001 and received in June of 2002 with 25 miles on the odometer. When sold, it had registered 158,000 miles. It was a great ride, both figuratively and literally! After 18 years, I was ready to move into a newer product and decided on a 991.2 Turbo "S" in GT silver. I love the new ride. But the real reason for this post is to thank the 996TT community for all the support over the years (we have sold so many 996tt exhausts to forum members here) and to let everyone know that I will always have a wealth of knowledge and experience with these cars to share and a special attachment to the 996TT. Also, it has been great being a member of this forum and part of everyone sharing information for the benefit of all 996tt owners. In the early days Speedtech did not even exist and I was here like most of you - to learn and for personal enjoyment and I still visit every day for the same reasons. I still see a few original members here, which I enjoy, too.
Then in 2007, I designed our first exhaust and it became part personal/part business. Anyhow, I will continue to be very active and fully support the 996tt platform with our SpeedTech 996TT products. We are still supplying an enormous amount of our 996TT systems and it is largely because of the great testimonials on this site, so again, thanks everyone for all the kind words and support over the years. We are hoping to work our SpeedTech magic on the 991TT now and are about to begin a through R&D program for a few new twists on our 991 Turbo exhaust!
Thanks John for being an enthusiast owner and an honest man. It's a lot more than we can say about other exhaust builders on this site. I just hope you continue to make high quality products for the Porsche community. I will be adding a new Turbo before long but I will be keeping my 996TT. Enjoy the new Turbo in good health and share some pictures of your new baby!
I look forward to your future post with ~160K miles on the new car. I cannot remember how many compliments I received about the SpeedTech exhaust on my 996TT but one stands out the most.
Switzer asking me what exhaust was on the car after some hot laps at Mid-Ohio and stating how glorious it sounded.
Thanks for your contributions. I always get thumbs up when I fire up my car with your exhaust.
The new ride looks great.
Later, Steve
Thanks, Steve!

Yea, I got that aerokit wing from Tom Kerr, who turned his speed yellow 996TT into a dedicated track car with an oversized rear wing. I had been looking for a while, as they are not easy to find and it came up and happened to be the right color, so it really worked out well. BTW - That wing is original factory SY paint, so if you have SY, an easy retrofit.
I will try to describe the differences as best I can...it is totally different in performance attributes, yet feels the same when seated, looking out the wind screen, hands on the wheel, etc. The newer 991.2TT S still feels like a traditional 911 turbo, which I love, but the handling, braking and acceleration are light years ahead of the 996TT and I am really embracing the change. I absolutely love the 991.2 turbo. My former 996TT was pretty heavily upgraded in terms of power mods and this car is faster in stock form, although they are both in the same power range. With the PDK and no delay on the 1-2 shift, it's like a rocket and much quicker than a manual shift car with similar power. When driving all out in tight twistys, it's both hands on the wheel with auto sport+ engaged and hang on, as the violent nature of the quick up shift and slight torque steer at redline with the car in a corner seem to demand full steering control. The sport+ setting shifts at red line every time and downshifts intuitively, so perfectly, that it's best to just concentrate on steering and braking, mash the throttle and brakes as required and let the car do the rest when driving hard. The 991TT with PDK is so capable and so fast, it is really best suited for a track. One hand on the shifter and one hand on the wheel (which is how I drive it normally) is great for regular sporty driving/shifting or straight wide open pulls, but not when driving all out in tight turns. Then the launch control from a standing start is just amazing and is a 2 hands on the wheel event (it demands attention), although I have little use for that other than an occasional demo for someone.
IMO, the larger differences lie in the braking and handling. The 16+" ceramic brakes on the S are so powerful that if the passenger was not wearing a seat belt and you had to stab the brakes, their head would be through the windshield and that is no exaggeration. This car could be very dangerous for a passenger with no seat belt. The braking force is not comparable to my former 996TT, I thought those brakes were incredible when I bought the car in 2002 and they were back then. Bottom line, phenomenal braking, huge upgrade in stopping power!
The handling with 4 wheel steering is also very, very good! As an example, on a few highway on/off ramps that are part of my routine, I know what speed the 996TT begins to feel taxed. I can negotiate at the same speed in the 991TT and it feels like a Sunday drive, like I am not even pushing the cat yet. It is effortless and extremely confidence inspiring. The 991tt feels substantially more planted and secure in the corners, so again, I can feel and I am enjoying the new technology...the upgraded handing aspect of the newer platform is a great upgrade and more enjoyable (to me). Another huge difference!
I remember when I had my 993TT, I thought it was unbelievable and kept it for a period of time after getting the 996TT to make sure the 996TT was the right move. I stopped driving it and then sold it and have never regretted selling it or looked back. I think this is a very similar scenario, I loved the 996TT, but now that I have moved on to the next thing, once again, I have absolutely no regrets. It was the right time for me, but bear in mind, I ordered the car new for '02 delivery and drove it for 18 years and 160,000 miles, so I had my time with it.
I had driven a lot of the newer 911's while doing exhaust design/testing over the years and they never spoke to me, but owning one and getting to know it is different. The new 911's are really nice to own and I am thrilled to have the 991.2TT S, it has a number of advantages over the 991.1TT and it seems to be a pretty sweet generation. A significant change.
Believe it or not, I have yet to mod it, I have been totally enjoying it in stock form so far!
Thanks, Tim. Yea, I kind of figured that once I started researching the differences. After reading about the new .2 throttle body dynamics and larger turbos on the .2 "S", fueling, etc., I knew the .2 was the one for me. I am so pleased with the decision, really enjoying it. I have a few things in store for it, such as the full aerokit, which happens to be arriving tomorrow, but not a lot. These cars are so good out of the box that I don't need to do much to reach my goals. My goal was always 10.3@139 - I think this one might do it. From what I have heard, just exhaust and tune gets you very low 10's, upper 130's and that's exactly where I want to be. The 139 part may be tough, we'll see.

You are a great contributor and valuable expert for everyone on this forum! I still love my exhaust, and look forward to you tempting me into a similar change. But, I probably won't be able to steer away from the SY!
