About to remove engine + transmission : need advice on my set-up
As the title says, I am about to the remove engine (+tranny) to :
The motorcycle lift is 2 X 6 ft. I would like to avoid having to buy a separate HF hydraulic table for which I have no further use.
How would you guys position the motorcycle lift under the engine, give that it is not that wide (@ 2ft) ? Should I put some kind of a pallet on top ?
I saw one video on YouTube where somebody had built a cradle, but I do not feel this would be necessary since I do not intend to remove my exhaust. As such, I see no risk the engine could roll to the left or the right, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
Below are some pictures of my set-up, would appreciate your guidance.
- Renew clutch;
- Pin coolant hoses
- 8K lbs 2 post lift
- 1K lbs hydraulic (motorcycle) lift
- Several other car and ATV jacks, all rated 1 to 1.5 K lbs

I'd strap a wider piece of plywood on the area the engine will rest on, it does look a little bit narrow. The engine rests on the bottom brace thing and does rock back and forth a little when resting. It is sort of unstable. You could also strap the engine to the table so it doesn't move, that would do it. Remember the inlets from the air filters to the turbo stay with the car and you can break your intake manifold if you don't take the bolt out of the top. Careful not to scratch the power steering return line that comes out of the tank. It has a weird compression fitting that is hard to pull out. If you scratch the surface it leaks. Those are the two expensive mistakes I made, trying to save you from making the same. Lift it off slowly and check if you missed anything as you go. Don't forget the ground cable to the right of the engine.

Pallet or wide piece of plywood are both OK, also have some pieces of 2x4 and 1x4 at hand. With those you can wedge and stabilize the engine to the pallet. In addition to grounding strap cables to starter and reverse gear sensor cable are easy to forget. And line to the clutch...
