ABS pump replacement

Gentlemen,

I had code 4460 come up repeatedly, and then permanently. We have been through the entire fault check thread for 4460, including replacing the pressure switch. No luck. We now plan to either repair or replace the complete pump assembly. The car is a 2001 996 Turbo Tiptronic. The Durametric lists the unit as a Bosch 5.7 part number 996.355.755.50 and Supplier Part number 004156016610, but this is not the entire assembly. The complete unit is 996-355-955-CX and costs $4,900 from Sunset Porsche plus core charge.

According to Sunset Porsche the part numbers that fit are 996-355-955-57, 996-355-955-58, 996-355-955-59, 996-355-955-63, and 996-355-955-CX. There may also be a corresponding Bosch part number 0 265 225 101 but we have not removed the pump to read the part number on the unit. as the car is driveable.

I would appreciate a lead to a used pump or a recommended repair place, or further ideas on how to fix the problem.

Might be better to post on Rennlist or Renntech... Rennlist is way more active.

We have now removed the ABS unit from the car. The electronic control unit has a Bosch part number 972219 0 265 950 017 . We sent it to XeMODeX but they do not seem to be able to help so we are now again looking to replace it. I asssume there are later versions of this control module.
- Can you guys assist be telling me what Bosch part numbers are compatible with this one?
- Any ideas are welcome...

Adding to the above:
I found a unit with very similar part number on ebay and took a chance and ordered it:Article number comparison: Electronic module Complete assembly
My car: 260 950 017 996.355.755.50
Unit just purchased: 260 950 047 996.355.755.52

According to the VIN # lookup it came from a 2001 C4. Do you think it will work in my 2001 996 Turbo? If so, will it require any change in the ECU in order to be recognized?

Looking forward to the help from you experts!

Word on the street is changing out the black half of the ABS module, the one with all the electronics, requires a VIN reprogram to the module. Possible to do with a legit Porsche PWIS system, but not with Durametric. Dealers may or may not do this for you - might raise a liability stink if you did the module replacement yourself. As for your C4 module... you'll likely need a reprogramming. You could try replacing just the metal valve block half while retaining the original black plastic block... but this smells more like a control module fault and not the valve block. Suppose you could try replacing the metal half first, in case something leading to the sensor interferes. I have a guide for this. Have you tried the troubleshooting steps in the manual?

Thank you for this thorough answer. I have been told that my shop, European Performance has gone through the trouble shooting guide above.

Timing is perfect as European Performance will work on this in the next few days. I will let all know how it goes.

ABS pump replacement woes, continued

So far we have replaced the ABS pump (see above), the high pressure pump, left front wheel sensor with harness, and the yaw sensor. After the pump replacement and programming with Porsche PWIS system I got no errors. However, the front brakes lock up while the rears seem to have functional ABS. The brake pedal kicks back hard on dirt, but not so much on asphalt. However, the front lockups on asphalt are quite spectacular.
The wheel sensor was replaced after throwing an error, and the yaw sensor indicated incorrectly. It was replaced with the newer rate of turn sensor 996.606.145.00. The yaw rate and wheel speeds now all look good in PWIS, and we have no errors.
Brakes have been bled using the Porsche system, and manually.
Any ideas as to why ABS would not activate on the front brakes without any error codes showing up in PWIS would be welcome!

Are you running standard tire sizes or something different? These cars ABS/PSM are very sensitive to tire sizes as well. Are you still getting the same error code after the replacement of all those pieces?

I am running 315/30-18 and 235/40-18 Michelins so diameters are identical. I have run these sizes for a long time, and it did not cause a problem in the past, so I don't think that is a cause.
Thanks for thinking.
