Question 996 Turbo vs GT3 track car

Hi all,

I am currently on the hunt for a track car. While I understand the GT3 is superior out of the box for track (suspension) I love the concept of a turbo. I called a workshop that I respect, and posed the same question. They said something along the lines of "are you crazy, the turbo will heatsoak and have 320hp at the end of a track day". On the other hand on this forum I frequently read that people are taking their cars to the track.

So my question, are there issues with the turbo? Does it really heatsoak with the stock power? Anyways all opinions appreciated.

p.s. I love the aerokit wing on the turbo!

The Turbo performs fine at the track but does need quite a bit of work to make it really good. New coilovers, swaybars, and various suspension bits are needed to really get it to handle well. A brake upgrade could be needed if you go pretty hard. Both great cars. If the Turbo is calling to you go for it.

I'm curious about opinions here. Yes, there will be heat soak with a turbo, and yes, as pointed out, to get the turbo track ready, I'd argue you'll want the suspension upgraded, likely the front brakes to 6-piston, as well as a few engine upgrades to address some of the heat soak issue. Out of the box, yes, the GT3 is designed and ready for the track, but having driven both 996 versions and if I were to go it again, I'd stick with the turbo and just accept the upgrades as part of the track readiness process. The GT3's are fun though, and I do love the stock sound over the turbo.

in terms of values, it'd be so much easier to track the turbo

Really depends on your track experience.
A stock or mildly upgraded turbo is perfectly fine for the novice to intermediate run groups. The GT3 doesn’t have traction or stability control so probably not the best as a first track car.
Beyond that, the choices are limited by the budget.

Turbo all the way.

only thing you’ll be missing is the sound and high shift points.

The GT3 is definitely more track-ready out of the box, but a well-sorted turbo can hold its own. The heat soak issue is real, especially if you're running stock cooling, but there are aftermarket options like upgraded intercoolers that help manage temps. If you love the turbo’s feel and power delivery, it might be worth the extra tweaks to make it track-ready.
