996 Turbo Safari Build

Has anyone else done one?

I’ve been sadly not using my track prepped 996 Turbo and after seeing a couple Dakars today, I’ve decided to do a Safari Build for my 996 Turbo.

I’m wondering the most about wheels and tires. I have GT2 calipers with 997 rotors. Does anyone have experience fitting BRAID 18” wheels over this brake setup? Really do not want to go back to the stock setup for brakes.

Might be able to reuse my GMG swaybars and possibly the Tarett control arms. But the JRZ RS1 suspension is going to have to be replaced - likely with Elephant Racing’s custom coilovers. And then of course their subframe spacers.

I also plan to go all out with safari bars, lights, and a roof rack. Going to be a blast! Want to do some real off-roading - like I’m on an atv or side by side - but a Porsche!

For those that have this type of build, how hard are you on your car? Anything else you recommend to do? I already have a half cage and a strut tower brace that makes the chassis more sturdy.

I have long wished I had the wherewithall and ability to endeavor such a build. Not only because I think the Dakar build is genius, but because it would be a terrific answer to the reality my car will never again be a cosmetically sought after car. It lives in a desert and as such should appear as capable of competing in the Baja 1000.

I will follow your project with great interest given I cannot undertake my own. Good luck.

I will definitely make a build thread! I hope to do the majority of the work on my own.

I just got off the phone with Braid Wheels. They are going to send me a few templates so I can see what will fit with these brakes and aftermarket suspension components. If I can fit 17" wheels, I will.

The other thing that is unclear is if the 996 Turbo will be "happy" without staggered wheel/tire size. There's one line on the Elephant Racing site saying it'll be fine, but before ordering wheels and tires, it'd be nice to have more data.

Having the same size "skinnier" tire is desirable for many reasons....

Anyone here have experience running 225s or a very similar size tire on all 4 corners of a 996 Turbo?

I placed an order with them today! It took a lot of back and forth to get it right because there’s so many decisions to make and there was part number confusion in their system, but I should have components arriving as early as next week.

Now to figure out the rest of the body stuff - especially skid plates. Can’t find anyone that manufactures those. The safari bars and basket are straightforward from Elephant Racing too.

I think "Elephant" is leading the concept to actual fruition with their kits and expertise. Looking fwd to seeing the end result as I've been following with a casual interest. Not because I could take on such a project myself, but rather because I think it's a terrific variation of the platform! GL w/ it!

After much reading and watching videos I’ve come up with a plan for the suspension parts I’ve ordered from Elephant Racing, Pelican Parts, and Suncoast Porsche. This is very high level, but steps for each item can be found in manuals and videos. This order is designed to avoid “rework” and give me the most room for each step. There’s a handful of tools that I didn’t have that I ordered - like ball joint separators and crows’ feet. I’ll probably add torque values in all the reassembly steps as I go through them.

Front

Front Coilovers

  1. Remove hard line bracket
  2. Remove front calipers - hang with hooks
  3. Disconnect ABS + wear pad sensors
  4. Remove sensor bolt and wires tuck behind radiator hose
  5. Remove rotor
  6. Remove swaybar end link
  7. Remove caster arm
  8. Remove lower control arm from subframe side. Keep bolt in
  9. Scissor jack under tie rod
  10. Remove 18mm nut from tie rod
  11. Remove scissor jack. Tie rod might fall out
  12. Pull out bottom control arm bolt
  13. Remove 3 13 mm nuts. Mark holes first. Support with jack first
  14. Put on bench
  15. Remove swaybar end link
  16. Save washers from top of struts. Remove nut from top of struts

  6. Use grease on shaft to slide on boot with clamp on it
  7. Crimp clamp
