Rolling Fenders?

OK, to some this may sound stupid to some, but what does rolling fenders involve, and why is it necessary? Now that I am looking to make the move to 19" I've have been advised that this may be necessary.

Thanks...

It involves using a special tool (or a baseball bat if in an artisan's hands) to fold up the internal sheet metal edge of the fender around the wheel opening. The stock configuration has the "lip" horizontal. After rolling the lip would be angled up significantly. It is done to add a little bit more clearance width-wise to allow extra wide tires room to articulate with the suspension. It is a function of the tire size, wheel size, wheel offset, spacers, and suspension gemetry (extent of lowering). You can get away with 19's with new rubber and lowering without having to do this. You just need to choose the right components. Keep in mind, rolling WILL weaken the fender slightly.

Thanks Ken,
One more question, is this a labor intensive project and how much would a fair charge be for this service?

Thanks again!

I have 19's and did not have to roll the fenders. I am using 315/25's on the rear with no issues.

I paid nothing to have mine rolled. Techart makes a tool that is made for rolling the fenders. It should not take long to do at all.

Yes.
The weakness is in a direction perpendicular to the surface of the fender. You have essentially lost the stiffening element. In general, this will not make a hill of beans of difference. However, if someone were to rest their fat *** against your fender, the rolled one would deflect and kink before the non-rolled one.
Basically, it doesn''t amount to much difference from a practical standpoint, but just thought you should know.
