turbo seals or rings
as much as i love this car, i really wish i could go back and do it over - the record is 2 weeks w/o an issue.
the car has a fair amount of smoke at start-up, no biggie, this seems to be par for the course.
what i noticed today - i was sitting at a light, a very screwed up light that didn't change for 5 minutes, and the blue smoke starts creeping out the back. sigh.
later, i sat in the parking lot and after about 3 minutes of idling, a steady stream of blue smoke pours out.
obviously, a leakdown & compression test will tell the true story but what do you think? thanks to the IRS, i really don't feel like spending $30-40k on a rebuild and a gt700 kit (or the protomotive equivalent)... sigh...

Might want to do a leak down... These cars are pretty strong so unless you were running lean etc... I'm not especially familiar with the programing that you have but as long as it keeps the stock knock supression in tact then that also shouldn't be an issue? The smoke up stuff is a-ok on start up (just part and parcel) but the blue well...I hear you on the tax. Don't get me started!!!
with that HP I dont this its as bad as u think.... whos turbos are u using????
have hope .

the programming should be fine - it's gone back to protomotive a few times.
the car was hitting pretty high boost - 1.55 bar or so - thanks to a mis-adjusted wg spring and no thanks to the worse-than-crappy stock boost gauge.
i *think* it's blue but i've never been able to tell smoke colors that well; i will take it out later and see if it's white or blue.
i always thought white was coolant & head gasket; blue was the 'safer' smoke - turbo seals or rings.
sharky, i guess i'll be visiting you afterall for the leakdown.

man sorry to hear that
You haven't had the best of luck yet... Just as an FYI, I do remember that 01s had some blow-by on the piston rings and a few of them got redone at Carlsen Porsche a couple of years ago. It seemed to be on 01s but that was white smoke upon start up and "more than the usual"... Blue could also be the turbos running way too hard, seals being shot etc.. and then oil seeping/coming through there?
Just as a point of reference; I have an '01 with just over 25K miles. I occaisionally get a puff of smoke out of the car on start-up. Only now and then, NEVER "a fair amount at start-up" as a normal thing.
Also never get smoke after sitting at idle, no matter how long.
A quick opinion would be that 1.55 Bar would be a pretty high boost pressure on stock internals. And that a bad waste gate spring could cause a problem despite the anti-detonation programming......
I'd get that leak down test.........sorry for your problems dude.

I know you've also got Kevin's upgraded turbos and I kep forgetting which ones? Stage II, IV or V? If they're the IV/Vs then I think they can handle that much boost but otherwise on the Stage IIs I think he says 1.3 max? We should ask him...

they have *no* problem boosting up to 1.55 under a load. i've got the boost controller set to 1.4 now; they taper down to about 1.15 at redline. as you know, the midrange is pretty insane.
one other thing i thought of - once, the coolant hose was leaking a touch. maybe it's leaking again, causing the smoke. (i can be hopeful, right?)
i just took the car out to terrorize the SF lunch crowd but no smoke. let it idle in the garage for 5 minutes, no smoke...

OK sounds good. I'll give him a ring and we'll figure that out
If it's the coolant hose that I think it is then that's been a common feature on these cars too. We'll pop that back in for you...See it's warmer now too.. less smokey
