Kudos to Kevin @Ultimate Moterwerks (Flash Upgrade)
I have been looking for quite some time on a stage 1 flash for my 2001 996TT and did my fair share of homework and research. Since I am relatively new to the “turbo game” (I am used to American muscle cars where cubic inches rule) I wanted to select a tuner that would hold my hand through the process and have many reasonably priced upgrade paths should I choose to go beyond a 1.0 bar stage 1 flash, which is likely. Kevin really fit the bill. He spent quite a bit of time on the phone and answered a ton of e-mails from me. He is the ultimate enthusiast and really knows his stuff! Kevin now offers a Pocket Power programmer (“PPP”).
The device works awesome and is really cool. The PPP is about the size of a deck of cards. Kevin sends you the PPP via FedEx and you download your stock file via the OBDII port. It takes about 2 minutes for the download of the stock program from your ECU. You do not need to remove the ECU, a nice advantage (no worry about bad solder jobs or getting lost in shipment, etc.). You then send the unit back to Kevin for him to load the programs. He can loan up to 8 programs on the PPP. What’s cool is that Kevin can determine whether your ECU is stock or you have any codes that could be of concern. Also, Kevin’s program modifies the stock Bosch Motronics program. It does not just increase boost. Once Kevin returns the PPP you load whatever file you desire. I purchased stock, valet and performance.
As for the performance, HOLY COW! This totally transforms the car! This is the way the car should come from the factory. It is amazing, especially on the highway. The car even idles smoother. I have no way to compare this to PSI or GIAC but from what I understand in very basic terms all 1.0 bar K16 programs should perform about the same. You should select a tuner you want to continue to do business with in the event more is wanted. Anyone thinking of a flash upgrade should definitely speak with Kevin. The education alone is worth it.
BTW, I have no affiliation with Kevin. I am just a happy customer. J

Adam,
Congratulations on your purchase. I have ordered the stage 2 kit (Turbos + ECU Flash), as well as a clutch kit Kevin recommended (which last and holds better than stock) for a friend of mine. I agree on your write up concerning how you get all the time you need on the phone with Kevin. I am not dissing any other tuner, but wanted to add to your post from personal experience.

I have been very happy with Kevin's personal service as well. I am still working at getting mine running, but the PPP (as you have designated it) does work well (actually similar to the flashloader for GIAC). Kevin even wrote a turbo break-in program which performed flawlessly.
Kevin is awesome. He came to my house 3 times over the weekend to talk, answer questions and deliver the PPP. What a cool unit. Works great. I had the car out for a while last night and it performed flawlessly. I was having trouble deciding between GIAC and PSI and then Kevin released his...too damn many great choices. Glad I went with Kevin...service second to none.
