I previously used the Cups for two years. GREAT traction when hot, but terrible traction when cold. Unfortunately, you rarely get the Cups to their optimal temps during normal street driving. Rather, during normal street driving, the Cups are well below optimal temps and they do not grip well. Great for the track and/or extended hard canyon driving. I just switched to PS2s for better traction during normal street driving and, so far, they appear to be doing well.

Craig...you serious about the cups? I was just going to get some in place of my PS2s...I was going to go 235F & 315 rears (on 18")...but not if you think they are that bad?

The 305/30/19 is to big for the rear of a 996. The correct size for a 996 rear is 315/25/19 with O.D. of 25.2 and the 305/30/19 is for the 997 cars the O.D. is 26.2 so it is an inch taller. this tire size will be problematic on the 996 we need the tire companies to expand the R compound range to run 19" on our cars.

Even with Cups available for 19" wheels, I still think it is a mistake to run 19's on a 996 for max performance. The lack of sidewall on these super low-profile tires coupled with the already stiff sidewall of a Cup tire is going to create some real handling issues unless you have an optimized suspension setup on a glass-smooth track. Just watch...

i used 18" heat cycled sport cups (from tire rack) for track use on my twin turbo.. got lazy and never took them off.. on the street, every time i used the car, the first time i punched it, usually around a turn, the tires, especially the fronts, would claw and scratch the pavement like mad... but then they warmed up and were ok..
.
when they wore down, the car was a handful in the rain (hydroplaning) but they were past their usable street life..
