Idea for Craig, Markski (and others with intercoolers)

Craig, I remember asking abut aftermarket "scoop extenders" for the intercooler ducts. These are basically aftermarket replacement or tack-on extensions for the side scoops that thoeretically catch and move more air through the intercoolers.

Anyone do more than just scratch the surface on these? Are they useful?

There is a company that makes carbon fiber intercooler scoops for a 996TT (I forgot the name). They are fugly. Moreover, I suspect that they add considerable drag to the car.

I think spraying water on the intercoolers with an injector or two fitted above them is a better solution for the really hot days.

i can't remember who makes those but they are pretty weird looking and I doubt they help do much more than add more drag...

The company that made the big scoop extenders was Kokeln. Although most of their products are very functional... as their products were built for racing.

I think Manthey Racing also makes a modified side air scoop... it looked pretty subtle but I'm sure it works brilliantly.

Just a random thought I had reading this threas. A sprayer before the intercooler close to the intake might be effective too. The spray might have time to evaporate and cool down the air before it reaches the intercooler. The cool air would then contact the entire intercooler, sprayers directly onto the intercooler might not cool down the whole surface.

I am not too familiar with sprayers but I assume that the current sprayers spray directly onto the intercooler because the intercooler is not in any duct like the 996tt is. The duct allows for spraying in the entrance to the duct. Any water that drips past the intercooler is lost cooling. I think spraying in the start of the scoop will allow water to evaporate and cool the air before the intercooler and any water left over will land on the intercooler and evaporate there.

Also I dont know how much resistance to airflow the intercoolers produce, or how much air actually flows across them during driving, its possible that a electric fan on the bottom of the intercoolers would produce more airflow then driving.

As I said just a thought I had. Also for those with sprayers do you use deionized water to prevent scale/mineral deposit build up?

Craig- I dont know how much they stick out compared to stock so I cant calculate how much drag they produce. But you have to calculate how much more air they flow and how much cooling the greater air flow can acomplish. Once that is done figure out if the cooler air will give more power and if that extra power is greater then the extra drag.

This is the Manthey Racing scoop that Hamann7 was talking about. Pretty expensive but it's probably worth it.

I used to use an Aquamist methonol/water spray on the intercoolers. I am now switching to a nitrous spray

My guess is that Rennworx carries them here in the US being the US dealer for manthey.

Here's a link http://www.manthey-motors.de/mainfra...lang=de&e1=193 .

It's in German but if you press "Lufteinlab", fifth choice in that menu you'll see it. Price is 1,040 Euros.

I've done a nitrous spray to the intercooler on my supercharged S2000. Doesn't help too much since it's air-to-liquid. It will have a much more effect with air-to-air intercooler. I may move it from my S to the P if I can find a good way to route the lines and place the bottle.

Rennworx is the official US Manthey distributor like Khalid said. Get in touch with Bill (proprietor).

bk@rennworx.com

I attached the Manthey catalog. I got it from Rennworx.com
